Default Can somebody just tell me about Phantasy Star I/II/III?

I'm not the RPG type of gamer, but I really like Phantasy Star IV. Looks great, sounds great, plays great, and I dig the story. I would really like to play through the first 3 games, but I just dont see it happening. I've tried them, but they just aren't as appealing to me as the fourth one, defenitly not appealing enough for 20/30+ hours of gameplay.

I'm getting ready to play through PSIV, and from the little I've played around with it seems like the plot has a lot to do with its 3 prequels. Can someone who has played any of the first three games just give me a rundown of what happens? I would greatly appreciate it, and you would be saving me hours, and hours.

I don't recall the storyline very much, but gameplay-wise, my favorite of the first three is part one. It's very tough at the beginning because you can walk out of town and die on the very first enemy you run into, but once you've gained a few levels the game moves a lot more smoothly. The dungeons and the music are awesome.

My favorite of the four is still Phantasy Star III. I like the music, I like the characters best, and I like being able to play through the game seven times before seeing all of the characters and endings. That was unprecedented, and seems to be something that will never happen again.

I liked all of the Phantasy Star games, though all of them do have their strenghts and weaknesses...

If you go for a congruent Storyline, you might wanna skip PS III - one of the endings ties loosely into the general PS-canon, but overall it tells a wholly different story on a different world. Also, PS III is generally considered to be the weakest storywise. HOWever - personally I liked "Generations of Doom", since the different generations-aspect and their impact on the world was kinda intriguing.

PS II has some very irritating dungeons that are almost impossible to navigate without a map - I threw the towel twice once I reached Dezo, since I hated navigating through the labyrinthene levels. However, the story is awesome, with a couple of dramatic, stomach-churning twists on the way.

PS I has pseudo-3D dungeons that can be a tad disorienting at first. But overall it's a pretty good game and a recommended play.

You don't need to have played the other games to follow PSIV. They aren't even consistently translated anyway.

The original Phantasy Star is by far my favorite.

Phantar, you make me look even more silly than usual!
Here I always said that I knew nobody along German gamers who cared about the imo craptastic parts 2 and 3 of the series, and now you prove me wrong! You actually enjoy PS II!

Itīs still way beyond my horizon how anyone can feel that way, but I canīt deny the popularity of it with many people.^^

Did I really deserve a facepalm? I was trying to be nice, but let me be honest. The first 3 Phantasy Star games are terrible in my opinion. No way in hell I would waste 100+ hours of my life sludging through those games. I was just asking someone who liked the games enough to play through them to tell me about their stories. All in preparation for my upcoming trek through Phantasy Star IV. Thanks for your help.

LOL, I agree with shinobimusashi. That setup makes me want to throw a game out the window. Admittedly, I never got into RPG's during the 16 bit days but never had any around to give a chance either.

Phantasy Star II according to me: Walk along, occasionally through a maze. Random encounters. Watch numbers go up. change colour pallette and repeat with larger numbers.

Seriously, by the third time fighting the exact same monsters in yet another colour, I was fully sick of it. I don't remember there being a huge amount of story either, though it was many years ago.
