Yes. When I was raised in Cuba, if you wore shorts or any other long beachwear, you'd be made fun of (in a much worse way than you would here in the States if you wore a Speedo). To wear beach shorts meant you weren't comfortable-enough with your body, either too fat or too skinny or probably trying to hide your small genitals, and this greatly diminished your masculinity in public, especially in the eyes of women.
