Default Gauntlet IV just rules, man!

Me and my pal beat the Quest Mode of Gauntlet IV a few days ago. The game just rules. It's a blast to play together and train your character. The story gave a very good meaning in the end and that music is so epic I'm considering playing it at some very special occasion (but the music is fantastic the whole game through, actually, thanks Hitoshi Sakimoto (I think he was called)). I really want Dungeon Explorer for the Mega-CD now, but the only copy on eBay is WAY overpriced :P.

I don't think I've ever played my copy. I know there's a bit of an issue with them not working. Maybe I'll check mine out. (Once I've finished Mole Mania)

The quest mode looks like alot of fun but I don't really understand the system. The manual is of no help. How far back are you placed when you die or restart from password?

Hmmm... It depends on when you last looked at your password (which "saves" it in memory until you get a new one or power off). So when you go to the menue again, it will hold your last password there so you can restart at the market with all your stats intact. Then when you enter the last tower, you can use the password there as well. If a floor of a tower has all the blinking blocks stepped on, there won't be any enemies next time you enter that floor.

This is definitely on my soon-to-beat list. But I have a couple of questions for you vets of this title before I tackle it myself:

What exactly constitutes beating this game? Quest Mode? Battle Mode? Record Mode? Arcade Mode? Or all modes?

Is there one specific mode that encompasses every level from every other mode? If so, that would be my choice mode.

You can only beat Quest Mode. Arcade and Record Mode are eternal, I think, and Battle Mode is only against friends. There is no mode that has all levels, since Quest Mode has unique towers (and the castle) which cannot be combined with other modes.

Quest Mode it is then. Even better, as I'd like to put this one in my Quasi-RPG Genny list.

But what makes them "eternal" about the other modes though? Does the game pull-out random dungeons or something with every level?

No, they begin to loop after a while.

Getting hitched? Picking up a boat anchor? Tying the knot? Getting the old ball and chain? Getting taken off the market? Coming out of circulation? Jumping the broom?

So, what makes it worth the gameplay? Do the dungeons get harder and harder with every loop? Are they randomly looped or is it a whole series?

    I dunno, man!

QuickSciFi: I dunno, man! I've mostly played the Quest Mode. But it is a whole series.

Yeah, go get one. Some games simply are the best to play when you are two.
