Thread: Would this AC adapter work well on a Sega CD2?

Question Would this AC adapter work well on a Sega CD2?

Hi everyone I'm new here. Just started collecting Sega hardware and games. Earlier today I won a Sega CD 2 on Ebay with no cables. I have everything I need already, but no AC adapter. I was thinking about getting this one((http://tinyurl.com/3sao622) since it's so cheap and says that it works with a model 1 Genesis, which I've read works with either of the two Sega CDs. I just want to know if it is compatible and reliable.

I don't have any experience with that adapter, and it may work just fine, but for what its worth I'd stress the importance of using the original first-party power adapters. Slight variances in the voltage output of certain adapters can result in things like buzzing sounds and other problems in consoles. Cheap multi-purpose adapters like that are designed to provide a quick and easy way to power up the console, but they aren't always exactly what is best for the console. You don't want to burn up a fuse or something important to save a few dollars. Plenty of official Sega AC adapters are available online, I'd recommend getting one of those to avoid any issues.

In case you're not sure, the same AC adapter (Sega 1602) is used for the Sega Master System, Sega Genesis Model 1, and the Sega CD.

The rating for the Sega CD is a 9v 1.2a output, so the adapter you're looking at is ok voltage wise, and should be ok amperage wise, since SEGA typically overshot their amperage ratings anyway. However, I'm with the above poster in that you really should get a SEGA branded AC adapter if at all possible.

I think I'll go with the official 1601 AC adaptor then. Better safe than sorry. Especially since fully working Sega CDs are somewhat hard to find.

Make sure the polarity is correct. Most people forget that part. It's just as important as voltage. The Genesis and Sega CD use negative center pins on their barrel jacks. Most electronics have the middle pin set to positive.

If you look on an official Sega AC adapter, the polarity icon will look something like this:

    + ~~~C~~~ -

Inside the C would be a dot, indicating the main pin of the jack/plug. The C represents the outer metal casing of the jack/plug, which in this case is positive.

There exist polarity adapters, but usually people don't even think of polarity being an issue. Do us all a favor and make sure the polarity of your AC adapter is center negative.

that supply will not work. I have tested the amperage requirements of a Model 1, and it is higher than 850mA. You need the full 1.2A to be safe.
