I've gone through a dry spell over the last few years where the heavy fast twitch games I used to love just took too much attention to enjoy. Fortunately that is starting to wear off.

Splatterhouse 3
Strider
Street Fighter 2 Turbo
I play most of my titles at least periodically. Probably Streets of Rage 2, the Road Rash series, and Super Street Fighter II get the most focus.
Babies...the unfortunate by-product of a good time.
I play anything that's good for popping in for a few minutes of fast action which on the Genesis is nearly the whole library.
These days it's usually just quick bursts on my RetroGen (yeah I know I'm a horrible person).
All of them, even the football games. The games I've played the most in the past 5 years would have to be Shinobi III, and Madden 92. Shining Force has gotten many hours of my time over the past few years, but not on Genesis hardware.
I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

Madden was one of the first games that I bought with my Genesis and I thought it was amazing at the time but there were a couple of things that bothered me about it right from the first version: substitution/play selection and passing windows. It just seems backwards to choose a set of players then force them into the wrong type of formations. The passing windows seemed like an interesting idea at first but what better way to screw up the other player than by putting a bunch of windows over his viewing area? By the time EA removed the passing windows from Madden, I had already started looking at Sega's Montana series; by Montana NFL 94, Sega had surpassed everything that Madden was doing by leaps and bounds. I did play Madden 96 on XBand, I mean it's not a bad game, I would probably actually like Madden more if Montana NFL 94 didn't exist. It's just so hard for me to get interested in playing Madden now.
Awesome call, though, playing football games is still the best especially in multiplayer.

I love the Montana games just as much. I don't like the Sports Talk games though. NFL 95, Primetime, and 98 are excellent simulations that were way ahead of their time's. I like NFL 94, but I prefer the later engine(95, PT, 98).

That's cool. You're right, the first sportstalk game was really bad and NFL 93 was better but flawed, too. I used to buy every football game each year then traded in the ones that I didn't care for. I didn't have a lot of money so most of my budget went towards football games every year. I didn't live near any place that rented or sold used games until about 1995. I double-checked last night and I still have Madden, Madden 92, Madden 93, Madden 96, College Football USA 97, and Bill Walsh SegaCD. I also have Montana 94, College Football's National Championship, and Montana SegaCD. I think the biggest turkey that I tried during the 16-bit era was Mike Ditka; besides being only a poor Madden-clone, it used to lock up on me, I think because of the trademark issue, took it back twice and every cart had issues. The one that got away from me was Unnecessary Roughness; I've read that it's dreadful but I could never find it to try it for myself.
I did play Sega's later games that you prefer but I didn't care for the new game engine as much as NFL 94. I was disappointed that they got rid of the advanced playbooks that included option routes and dumped the sportstalk feature. I also missed being able to play from multiple camera angles; I always preferred the sideline view and we would always let the offensive player choose which angle to play from so we ended up switching views on every possession most of the time. I did like that NFL 95 moved the camera out farther than Madden so that you could see your wide-outs lineup, though. By 1995, I was renting all my football games before buying so I don't have any of them anymore but I also seem to remember Madden 98 having some interesting multiplayer features like custom leagues but by then, everybody that I knew had moved on to 32-bit.
We fired up the original Madden last night and had a great time playing. I will say that the original Madden is probably the easiest for most folks to pick up and play. Thanks for recommending the Madden series to me again. We also tried some of my others for comparison and wow, the "deflection bubble" the defensive backs have in the original Madden are huge! We were knocking down most of the longer passes because of that. Bill Walsh for SegaCD, which I believe was EA's only football game for SegaCD, I had forgotten that you could play any position, even offensive lineman, fun with four players.

If I have them I'll play them. It's just that now, with all the games in my collection, statistics are not exactly on my favor. I try to even my gameplay time. But the ones I do play without thinking twice about it are always going to be Sonic 2 and Disney's Aladdin.

I've actually moved away from playing the mainstay titles in my collection and started to have my hand at some of the more obscure ones. At the moment, my focus in on Mazin Saga and Dahna: Megami Tanjō.
With respect to Mazin Saga, a number of reviewers have criticized the game for the cumbersome boss battles. The boss battles are not a walk in the park and are difficult. I'll have to reserve my judgement until I finish the game.
Dahna: Megami Tanjō is proving to be quite an interesting action patformer.
When I get a chance to play Genesis I grab one of the following:
Toejam and Earl
Streets of Rage 2
Sonic The Hedgehog
Mortal Kombat
Virtua Racing
Splatterhouse 3
Mazin Saga
Vapor Trail
