Well, I generally keep all my boxes as I'm a collector, but about a year ago, I lost all my SNES and N64 and Gameboy boxes due to rain. I was in between moving and rented a temporary storage in a place where I assumed they'd be safe from the elements, but I was wrong. Rain water soaked the box containing all those game boxes, and everything turned into a large, goopy mess. I am STILL upset about it. Hundreds of N64, SNES, and gameboy boxes gone for good, along with my Sega CD Lethal Enforcers large box.

So... maybe thats where all the other boxes went lol. Everyone lost them in the rain.

The answer is pretty simple. There are a great deal of people out there who see packaging of ANY sort as simply packaging and just trash taking up space when they can store the item somewhere else. The other half of us see a lot of this packaging as part of the item, and an essential piece to have if you're going to store, collect, or even just to resell. As kids we had an SNES, Genny, etc, and we always saw the boxes and manuals as part what was paid for, even if we kept the games lying around everywhere, so we always held on to them. Never threw away a box to a VHS, Casette, DVD, Game, CD or anything even with the advent of shitty cassette "game" bins and CD wallets. We even kept the boxes and manuals to things that no one else would, and I still do that sometimes nowadays, like for my digital camera, or my iPod, or my phone.
That's what I call commitment. I also tend to keep the boxes for those exact things (camera, iPod and phone). But in my case, I keep them because I find them to be the best place to keep the instruction manuals. Not too big to create clutter, not too small to completely disappear from view. Eventually (like in the case of my Cameras or phones), I end up putting the items back inside and gifting them whole or reselling them. Funny thing is, people who don't care about collecting or even gaming do this same exact routine. I don't get why they can't figure-out the importance of a plastic clamshell or jewel case just the same. It's mind-boggling.

There are boxes I don't keep, though. Like the other day, I happily threw away the box for my third party wireless PS2 controllers. They're as cheap as they come (no vibration), so I just wanted them for quick, 2 Player co-op of the retro sort (like Neo Geo compilations and such). Other boxes, like a TV or Air Conditioning box, I keep for exactly 30 days (or as long as the return policy allows on the store). After that, they're gone.

    That's a sad story
I guess I should be glad that I moved out of Illinois where rainwater and flash floods are a lot more common. I'm also a bit of a box hoarder, but I'm getting better about just letting it go when it's not useful broken or anything. Going back to my parent's house and cleaning out stuff is helpful too. I'm amazed at the amount of junk I managed to accrue there and then leave 1000 miles away.

When I was younger though I kept everything, I even had the original plastic that my GameBoy player for GameCube came in, and the plastic that went around the RAM expansion for the N64. I don't know what I was thinking...glad I pitched that last time I was back in IL.

Yeah, like I said, I am still kinda upset about it, since I had the boxes in pristine condition, including the boxes for a lot of the more sought after games. That said, I've actually set about to make recreations of said boxes, mainly since I don't plan on ever reselling my collection - you can go to any professional print shop and they'll help you select a grade of cardboard which matches these types of boxes for you.

Luckily, all the games were out of the boxes, or else I would have been furious. I did, however, lose the rumble pack I had stored in my Starfox 64 big-box. Luckily the justifier was outside of the Lethal Enforcers big box.
