I just want to add that some gamers on youtube are also part of a community. The fact is, not all the videos that are posted are meant for the general population, just the 300 or so users one coverses with the most, as well as present and future subs. If a random person out there happens to connect with that particular video, then it's a very welcome and awesome thing. That's where the unboxing vids come in. Believe it or not, it's a 'v'log, and it follows the life of a particular gamer you may or may not like. So unboxing vids, let's play vids, random colletion vids, all of them have a personal aspect to them with which only a few people will connect.
I do agree with some of the things on this thread though. Let's play videos are really along the lines of "...and here's what I'm playing today" vlog types. There are some playthroughs, though, that have commentary to them, and I really don't care for them at all. But I'm sure they're also meant for people with whom these particular youtube users converse with the most.
Straight-forward gaming channels are what one usually wants and are harder to find, sure, but not everyone in the youtube gaming community is crying out for fame. Most of us are just want to meet a few friends with whom to connect. I personally wouldn't be caught dead calling any of my own videos "entertainment." No way! They're just conversational pieces of my own. A vlog, that's all.
If I wanted to watch gaming-related entertainment, I'd probably go with high-value productions like CGR'HD', HappyConsoleGamer, Gamesack and the sort. And that's exactly what I want to convey here: that there are two type of gamers on youtube, the Vloggers and the Entertainers. The thing is, sometimes the "Entertainers" will share something very personal (and that's an awesome and very welcome thing); but it is very sad indeed when, on the other side of the spectrum, the "Vloggers" attempt to make their channel a cry for fame.
...just my take on the subject.![]()
Vloggers, unboxers and let's play gremlins should make their videos "Unlisted", so the average viewer doesn't have the displeasure of finding them through YouTube search...
Unlisted links are new and many people don't know about it. I don't do that, nor do I recommend it, because the links don't show in one's channel. Unlisting vids makes them hidden from everyone, including your subs, unless you give them the link. This method is the video equivalent to photobucket.
Very well stated as I used to be part of a larger community of video sharers myself. It makes me rethink my feelings on the unboxing vids since you've given them some perspective.
Repped!
As for lets play vids I sort of do that in a way, though my game commentary videos are just brief videos where I give my impression. I'm trying to improve with the new ones I just started and give more history and review content than I used to. I personally think my videos are crap but there's a handful of people who enjoy them and I like the conversations they start with people who have a similar taste in games as me. That makes it fun enough for me to bother doing it once in a while.
I also enjoy watching let's play vids of games that I really love to see other people's impressions of that game as they play it. If people didn't like watching them at all then nobody would and that's not the case.
But I guess I'm the kind of guy who always liked watching his buddies play video games and just enjoy the social aspect of it and let's play is kind of like that.

Why thank you sir.
Also a very good elaboration on the subject of gameplay vids on your part. For me, I actually find it entertaining to watch a buddy of mine play through an entire game. I even attend some live streamings sometimes. Protaku82 used to do them and was very proficient in platformers. The times that I bypass gameplay vids with commentary on them are, both, when I'm looking to learn what the game looks like in action and when I'm looking to gather some skill as opposed to reading a walkthrough. And, btw, based on your perspective, I can already tell I'd get a kick out of your gameplay vids.
well I hate those "collection" videos full of "maddens" I was going to suport those kind of people... but when I saw the comment "maddens" My mind came back
too old for video games huh?
Oh man, YouTube's been flooded with crap for a long time now. It's getting so that you can't find anything good except through dumb luck, and I don't have the patience to search that long. (And don't get me started on the comment pages. You could go into a chatroom on a porn site and read more intelligent statements...)

That fake unboxing video was the best thing ever.
My you tube wall was flooded with "PAX" 2011 videos for a while.
That was very annoying!
I also can't stand those unboxing and "my recent purchase" videos, this is the reason why I had to unsubscribe Petdorr's channel.
The moral of this thread: Everything is played out.
I don't give a damn what people would think of anything I make but I do agree there is a lot of shit burying the good stuff. I wouldn't make a crappy video if I know it's gonna be crap. I considered making gameplay vids with commentary but never bothered following through with it. I just stuck with complete game playthroughs. Sorry, I use emulators. Why? I don't have a capture device. If you're pissed off, it makes me lol, much like when I piss people off in this game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj0HeBdPou8
Unfortunately, talentless hacks with annoying videos and false information are what's hot on YouTube nowadays. I have a harder time finding some of the older awesome videos on YouTube involving collections and classic games in general. I've also noticed younger children (age 15-ish) talking about old consoles because they collect as well. That's find and dandy but give them a webcam and they'll be ready to spread tons of misinformation.

There's always something joyful about watching someone genuinely enthusiast about games.
The problem in most cases is that after a while it tends to get repetitive and boring, as if the person is doing it in autopilot mode or by obligation.
