I think my favorite video game movie has to be the first Mortal Kombat. Yeah it's campy but because of that it represents the source material beautifully and it was pretty much everything a kid in the 90's could want from a movie.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

    See I quite liked Doom . . . .

I would go with SMB movie as the worst, it was nothing short of horrible. I also agree with those who said that the first MK film was the best one.

The First Mortal Kombat movie is excellent. Once upon a time here on Sega-16, there was the Immortal Illuminati cult of Christopher Lambert.

Christopher Lambert rocks, but not as much as Adrian Paul. The first Mortal Kombat movie is surprisingly satisfying.

I saw the TV series before I went back and saw the movie so Adrian Paul is always going to be the one true Highlander in my heart. That and the TV series is freaking great. The movie is good but not quite as good.

Not to take anything away from Christopher Lambert who is also awesome.

Also that video of the SMB movie reminded me of the Goombas. How did an enemy with a giant head and tiny body become something with a tiny head and giant body?

First MK movie was awesome, I'll agree with that.

Someone please explain how you would go about making a live action Super Mario Bros. film without it being completely retarded. They should not have even attempted it. A big budget animated film, or one of those Roger Rabbit/Cool World live action/animation crossover films would have been a much better idea.

I don't play old stuff for nostalgia, I play old stuff because the games are better.

Anyway Doom wasn't the worst, and in fact I did find the final FPS scene rather amusing. Uwe Boll easily takes the (proverbial) cake when it comes to obnoxious VG adaptations.

As for the best titles? Easily Prince of Persia, but that might be because I haven't watched it.. Critically panned but at least it was a coherent movie.
Not by a long shot. That movie lacked substance. It was coherent, but way over-hyped.

I don't know about Legend of Chun-Li cause I haven't seen it, but the RE movies are fine with the exception of part 2. I'm anxiously waiting for part 5.

As for Prince of Persia, I thought it was a good old style adventure, we don't see many of those anymore. And it introduced me to Gemma Arterton - gosh, this lady is gorgeous

Silent Hill is the best video game to movie transition I can think of. (though it probably helped to be based on such a story/atmosphere rich franchise that already had an emphasis on cinematic quality of developing the story in the games)

I'm not sure about the worst.

There's also the odd case of movies that seem like they're based on video games . . . like The 5th Element. (which ironically had a terrible transition to a video game)

I always got a kick out of the fact that the Silent Hill movie drew inspiration from Centralia, Pennsylvania.

Real Steel which is in theaters currently could have easily been a video game first. In fact when I first saw the trailers it made me think "One Must Fall 2097: The Movie" when everyone else was thinking Rock'em Sock'em Robots.

Street Fighter is amazing, period. It can't be explained with words.

Aside from self-aware camp awesomeness (c'mon, nobody involved in that movie was taking it seriously), nothing really even compares to Silent Hill. It is as true to the source material as a movie can be expected to be, and takes all the right atmosphere and visual style from the games and actually delivers a well made, well acted Hollywood horror film. It's not for everyone, but I think it lives in the the impossible place between pleasing the fans and pleasing the average moviegoer (at least the ones who appreciate horror).

If a fan of the games can't appreciate that movie, there literally could be no adaptation that would please them.

^I must agree. Street Fighter was awesome. And so was the original Mortal Kombat. I only wish I could at least glance at a parallel universe where Van Dame actually agreed to play Johnny Cage. How awesome would that have been: an actor playing the role of a video game character based on himself. Fuck yes!
