Kollision, it's fair that you hate the Silent Hill film, but there's no way a movie (even an exceptionally faithful one) can give you even half an idea if you'll like the game or not. You're entitled to dislike the movie and the games all you want.
But, given no other information besides a film based on the game, and the indescrepencies between even the closest of things between mediums, and probably the most important fact that a movie in no way can convey the art of game design, it really shouldn't be enough to discourage you.
"Does your God know fear?"
Silent Hill and the first Mortal Kombat were probably the best translations from game to movie. I mean, they are pretty good to watch. You can see both today with full knowledge of the games and be all "yeah, that was pretty good." Things that got screwed up in Mortal Kombat were the Sub Zero and Scorpion deal, they weren't allies, they were hated enemies. Second how all of a sudden there are specific rules to the tournament in the last 20 minutes. Liu Kang says and I quote, "Sonya has to accept, or else there can be no final combat." What the hell does that mean. And if it's a tournament, wouldn't Johnny Cage, Sonya and Liu Kang have to fight each other? Some messed up concepts, but you really have to think about them to see them.
As for Silent Hill, I can't find too much wrong with the movie. Some people said Pyramid Head shouldn't have been there. But if you played the games as much as I have then you would have seen that Pyramid Head is based off of the old executioner of Silent Hill, or rather his appearance is. The only thing I found weird about this movie was the whole cult church thing IN darkworld Silent Hill. When did that happen? I mean the movie explains it, but why is it needed? All you need is to find Cheryl and make happy. And why is the cult the enemy of the otherworld? Aren't they supposed to be the thing that gives it proper substance? Some things are screwed up, but once again you have to look for things to bash.
This is your money, give me a smoking.
Silent Hill is a poor man's Jacob's Ladder.
The way they skirted around that for the movie's sake is it was basically just set up to be team good fighters versus team evil fighters. Yeah, they didn't really stick to the Mortal Kombat canon but they still did a decent job of capturing the universe and the feel of the early games and that was commendable.
I nominate Uwe Boll's interpretation of Alone in the Dark ... damn that was poor.
See this is absolutely ridiculous.
You think something like Silent Hill sucks? Cmon Its easily the best video game movie.
You need to go out and see some vastly worse video game movies. I'd say the top 2 worst movies are Super Mario Bros and Double Dragon. They're pathetically awful.
I'd say the top 2 best are the First Resident Evil and Silent Hill
House of the Dead 2 was worse than the first. Yes, really.
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.
In a "this is so cheesy that it's good" sort of way, maybe. But pound for pound, MORTAL KOMBAT has to be the best video game movie, bar none. MK in its own, even if you know nothing about the source material, is still a fun, decent kung-fu flick with lots of style and a pretty interesting story.
Not to mention it has an incredible soundtrack.
A retarded Sonic.
