Another drawback to the separate CD unit is that you also have to get the Super System Card to run all the games (and the card by itself fetched a few hundred bucks last I checked).
The Turbo System 3 card goes for $100 or less on eBay. Since he said that he could play PCE games, he can just use the $10 PCE System 3 card. But the Turbo CD is for collectors only and isn't a good value as a functional way to play CD games. A Duo R/RX is by far the best way to go in pretty much every way.

Dumb question, but can you interchange the TG16 and PCE CD add-ons? Like, a PCE-CD attached to a Turbo Grafx?

I think It's possible, but I'm not sure. There may be a voltage difference or something, another member may be able to fill you in on this.

The PCE-CD still has that infamous "Gear" that chips teeth though, mine worked for 2 years, then stopped, so I went and bought a Duo-R. It may have already been said, but the Duo-R & Duo-RX have the Super System Card 3.0 built in to it, so all you would need for some games would be the Arcade Card, except for the Altered Beast CD, which requires System Card 1.0 to run properly. Plus, you need a Duo in order to play any "Games Express" games, so a Duo-R would be better, and save you money in the long run.

I hadn't checked the price in a long time, but I just checked and see the US Super System Card sold recently for $200, so they're definitely still pricey. I didn't realize the JP version was so cheap, though, so honestly, if he can get a good price on a CD drive, this might be a lot cheaper than buying a Duo should Guntz want to upgrade.

I bought my Japanese Duo-R from Japan CIB for a little under $200 shipped just last year, so the Duo-R is actually cheaper overall.

That's a good price. We'll see if Guntz gets upgrade fever The only games on the TGCD that were must-haves for me were Gate of Thunder and Lords of Thunder. There were other good games, but most of my favorites are on Hucard.

True. There are plenty of great Hucard shmups for cheap, like Dragon Spirit, R-Type, Gunhed, Cyber Core, and many more, although none of those games are multi-player, unfortunately.

Now the real question: Do you have 4 friends willing to play Bomberman with you?

Yes you can interchange parts from them but they wont all fit together. I have seen people interchange the US and JP CD Roms though.

I've always liked the Hucard format. It was small, conveniently packaged in CD cases, and could be played in a handheld! That was pretty revolutionary. The Turbo is the only system I know of that let you play its games on a console and on a handheld during its lifespan.

Edit: I guess you could count the Nomad here as well, although its form factor was a bit less portable (especially with the huge cartridges).

The us and jap cd drives are interchangeable, but the docks are not. Also, there are at least two guys on pcefx that have replacement gears available for dead drives, and I can personally vouch for them as I have one of each sitting on my table. The repaired drives are loud though, like a Dreamcast.

They sound better than the majority of them though, as in dead silent and not working :P

Turbo CD drives and PCE CD drives are, I'm pretty sure, identical except for the color of the plastic they are made out of (US ones are black, JP ones often whiteish), but both have that bad gear in them, and while the CD drives themselves are interchangeable, the base units are not. You see, the Turbo CD (or PCE CD) aren't like a Sega CD, it's not a one-piece addon. Instead, it's two part addon, with both a large base unit that you plug the Turbografx into, and a separate CD drive that also plugs into the base unit. Then you just need one power cord, which comes with and plugs into the base unit, to power the unit -- the TG16's separate power cord isn't needed anymore, unless you want to use it without the base unit. The base unit is basically a TurboBooster Plus that can also attach a CD drive to it, so it has AV output (huge quality increase over the RF-only TG16!), and it also has a save capacitor in it, so having it attached (CD drive or no) gives you backup save for HuCard (or CD< with the drive) games that support saving.

Once you play TG16 on AV, you probably won't want to go back to RF...

Wow, someone finally made a replacement gear? That's fantastic news, I'd heard they were talking about it but it had always been deemed prohibitively expensive. I do have a Turbo CD drive, so it'd be nice to have one of those... the drive actually doesn't work, but it's not because of that gear -- the drive motor died, and I never got around to buying a new one and replacing it (by following the instructions on PCEFX for how to do it). I really should do that... but I do remember seeing that the suspect gear was discolored, unlike the other ones, so while it isn't damaged, it would make sense to replace the gear while I was at it, whenever I finally get to fixing that thing, I'd think.

The other thing I'd like to do sometime is get a TG16 modded to play Japanese games too... it'd probably be cheaper than buying a US CD Card 3.0 (I only have the 2.0 card), and it'd let me play import cards too. Another thing I haven't gotten to.

But anyway, even though the drive doesn't work, it's well worth it to keep that base unit plugged in so that I get the AV output and save feature.

Ah. Presuming I actually do some of the above things at some point and get into import PCE collecting, I probably would want a Duo Tap, so I could swap those cables and use the duo/pce controllers... it'd be nice to have 3 and 6 button controllers. Heck, there are US games that would benefit from those 3 button controllers... getting both the pads and tap might cost a bit though, and isn't needed for most games (the 6-button controllers would mostly be useful for fighting games, which aren't exactly the system's strength...), and as far as multiplayer goes I already have a turbotap and three controllers...

I bought a Duo-R with the past year for well under $200 shipped, with a new lens, "reinforced" contacts, RGB mod and some other stuff. Turbo CD and PCE CD ROMs are hard to find for less than a cheaper Duo R/RX package on eBay.
