Random battles should not happen, when said battles are ~15 minutes long.

    I like Shining Force 2.

If you want the darker story at atmosphere then go with Shining Force 1 but personally I could care less about that. I tend to like things with more levity these days.

    They're both classics regardless.

I love Shining Force III's as games and have only played the first scenario in English, but I never cared too much for any of the characters good or bad and the story in the first scenario wasn't anything special. SFIII is all about solid SF gameplay.

None of the games in the series beat Shining Force for style and the 32-bit universe character designs, music and artwork in general all fall short of the <16-bit Shining universe.

Take every reason every person in this thread has given for SF to be superior... and flip it around. SFII is my favorite Genny game, and is thus superior. The primary reason is the open world adventure/puzzle aspect which I consider a requirement for a good RPG. Whenever that is missing and the game devolves into a glorified steries of battles, it becomes devoid of any fealing of accomplishment. You are left to simply follow the sequence of events as lined out for you. That is also the reason I hate Lunar II and prefer the original in every regard.

you need to play all 3 scenarios to understand the storyline. the other 2 have been translated in recent years and can now be played in english. scenario 2 and most of all 3 is full of some incredible plot twists

I'm shocked there's people saying SF1 is a better game. SF2 beats it in any possible way, and so does its remake for the GBA, that still is no match for SF2.
SF3 is better than 2 in the battles, they're clearly improved over the older games, but in other aspects (story, art style, musics, etc) it's a worse game, plus it has that horrible 3D in the combat. If Camelot had used pre-rendered graphics like they did with Holy Ark and, a bit after, Golden Sun, would be a better choice.

you must be the only shining force playing in the world who thinks sf2 story is better than 3. I can't believe I just read that
