I didn't realise that Temple of Apshai was that old. I did not play it until the mid 80's on the C-64. My first turn-based RPG was Phantasie on the C-64.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

Never liked TB games, but there are exceptions (Chrono Trigger).

Yeah, the original release was 1979, for everyone's favorite computer, the TRS-80. Of course, they ported it to everything later. I only really played it for C64 myself, although I didn't like it much.

I played Phantasie a really long time ago, but only vaguely remember it. I also played a similar game called Questron by the same company (SSI). I remember liking Questron more.

I agree in an RPG setting, but oddly, I prefer turn based Strategy Sims/RPGs like Shining Force and Military Madness to Real Time Strategy. I also like the Worms games better than Death Tank for this reason. But I prefer RPGs to have an element of real time to them even if they are turn based, Panzer Dragoon Saga is the best example off the top of my head.

Turn based combat has a simple reasoning really. They are made for 1 player to have absolute control over multiple party members. I know there are people who balk at real-time battle systems like the Tales games, simply because they don't have full control over their party members.

I have no real preference really. But since I generally like button mashing, the Tales franchise hits a sweet spot between my arcadish gaming habits and my enjoyment for anime-inspired JRPGs.

Turn based RPG battles originated with table top gaming.

I never played either real time or turn based strategy games until Starcraft, and I was late to the game even then (started playing Starcraft around 2002 or so). Then I played Starcraft a LOT. It was a great game. I tried other RTS games, but none really stoked my enthusiasm like that one.

Same goes for turn based. I didn't even try any until Advance Wars, and I loved that game. The single player was entertaining (I only played SC multiplayer) and the multiplayer was even better. I went backward and played Military Madness and liked that game a lot as well.

I like both genres of strategy game when done well. I can certainly see the appeal of turn based RPGs, they're just not for me for whatever reason (and I have tried to like them).

That's true. The table top gaming was easily reproduced by early computing. Once computing became powerful enough, we got real-time battles with roots in table top gaming, but obviously a bit removed as the mechanics were no longer identical.

Again, to each his own. I was never into table top RPG games so that probably explains my disinterest in turn based RPGs. Even action RPGs only occasionally interest me (I liked the Diablo series, but that's about it).

I don't think computing power really had much to do with it. After all, the original Hydlide was available for the PC-6001, which is pretty comparable to the TRS-80 Model II or ZX-80. Any old computer that can do a decent action game should be fine with an action RPG. The original TRS-80 might be pushing it but I'm sure the Atari 800 is capable enough.
