The CD32 controller does NOT act as a multi-button pad! It has two modes: backwards compatible one button mode, and the new serial seven button mode. You need something like a Genesis 3-button pad, which acts as a two button pad just fine. You would need to do a little wiring to make it work as a three button pad.

I never said it acted as a 2 button pad, but several A1200 games natively support the pad. Fighting Spirit, for example (which was also released on the CD32). The way the controllers read the pinout is too different for it to act as a two-button controller.

I built myself a 4 button classic amiga pad, though, out of a Genesis pad and a hacked up keyboard. It plugs into both controller port 1 and the keyboard port on my CD32. A maps to the space bar, and start maps to both the 1 and p key. I also have a switch to map the C button (aka button 2) into the up button if necessary.

The point was that if the person tested the games with a CD32 controller, he wouldn't really know if they supported two buttons or not.

Sounds neat! I made an Amiga PSX adapter for the parallel port similar to ones for the PC. Worked rather well. I added support for it in ADoom/ADoomPPC, and also to lowlevel.library so it could be used in games the went through lowlevel.library for the pad.

I have an Amiga 1200 personally but I have always had a curiosity about the Amiga CD32, since hooking up a big Amiga to my TV and hunting floppy discs is just cumbersome for a quick session of Chaos Engine, and it's dead easy to 'port' floppy games over to the CD32 these days, especially when I can quickly test with WinUAE.

I didn't know about upgrading it though, i'll have to look into it.

I own a copy of the Genesis special edition release of the game with the Shaq music CD. It has one song on it, from his short lived rap career. I actually bought this thing sealed a few years back, for a whopping $10. So I can understand your curiosity about such things.

Also, I kinda like this game. I never understood all the hatred for it. It's not a masterpiece or anything, but it's far from terrible.

I think the SNES version is alright. I think the genesis version is pretty bad, due to smaller, less detailed sprites, worse sound, and, unbelievably, slower gameplay. Looking at videos of the Amiga version, Amiga:Genesis::Genesis:SNES. The ways the genesis version is inferior to the SNES version is the same ways the Amiga version looks inferior to the Genesis version. Slower, smaller and less detailed sprites, and no music.

I will agree that it gets a bad wrap, like many mediocre games which gain popularity on the internet. It's not the worst game ever, despite having a full blown campaign to eradicate it from the planet. It reminds me of how people seem to think Wing Zero is awful because it became popular on the internet for it's iffy translation, when in actuality it's a serviceable, albeit very plain shmup.

Agreed, there are certainly many, many worse fighters from back in the day. Cosmic Carnage comes to mind.

It got a huge amount of hype is why. Moreso than any equally awful game except Primal Rage (even) and Killer Instinct which had more. (@TheSonicRetard) This has nothing to do with the internet, it was reviled long before. Also it released during the heyday of 2D fighters, howevermuch those were confined to the arcades and NeoGeo; perhaps the heyday's wane, but still when there were really quality games coming out every year. It's not a terrible novelty but back at the time and full price--meaning for those who bought it it was their only new fighter for at least a couple months--it sure had some sting. Shaq's silly too though the game's opponents take that aspect too far; he's not nearly so bad as every character in Brutal, Clayfighter, and Ballz. Plust it hasn't to be the worst fighter on the Genesis or SNES to be terrible, let's not use Time Killers or what have you to justify every other substandard fighter's existence.

I see your two games, and raise you one Rise of the Robots. I don't know of another 2D game with a worse hype-to-quality ratio.

Anyway, I'm in the middle of trying to beat Shaq Fu on Expert (on the Genesis). The biggest problem with this game is that Shaq isn't much fun to use! He's slow and laggy, his special moves are useless, and his opponents can dance circles around him. Which I suppose means that the designers did a good job of capturing the real-life Shaq. (Zing!) He can't really counter or defend, so an all-out attack is the only way.

On Expert difficulty, there's definitely a bit more to it than "kick your opponent to death in the corner". Sometimes it's "punch your opponent to death in the corner", which works well against the green phantom opponent (too lazy to look it up). Other times you have to take to the skies -- the game depends heavily on the "jump in from EXACTLY the right distance" dynamic. I still haven't figured out how to deal with the second set of foes, except for the kid Nezu, who's cheap but easy once you get the hang of it.

I had the internet when Shaq Fu was released. It wasn't as venomously hated back then as it is today. Everyone just kinda accepted what it was. It wasn't really talked about that much.

And a few magazines gave Shaq Fu high scores.

Magazines give a high score to everything that's not based on Hollywood.

    And even then.

So I got this game a few days ago, and jesus christ it's bad. The visuals are a big step down, but beyond that, the controls absolutely kill it:

    Fast Kick: Down + Left
    Power Kick: Down + Right
    Tant: Button + Left
Fast Punch: Button + Down + Left
Power Punch: Button + Down + Right
    run: Button + Right
    block: Button + down

Incidentally, this is wrong. The CD32 pad DOES work as 2-button controller. Red is button 1, blue is button 2. I've been playing Joe & Mac, the Amiga 500 disk version, with the CD32 pad lately.

Not really. It'd likely be the best port of this awful game.
