I'm talking about games that had scrolling not early 80's single screen games. What do you think are the best ones ? Is Strider the best ? Castlevania ?

Black Tiger is my favorite arcade game. It's Capcom's take on Castlevania, with more platforming.
Why do you think side scrolling platformers were a lot bigger on consoles than they were in the arcades? I'm talking about the Nes/Genesis/TG16/SNES era and the arcade during those years those systems were popular.
I've always been partial to Robocop.
Because they demand an extreme amount of memorisation to the degree of cheap coin suckage in arcades. Sonic is one of few platformers really fit for the arcades, yet even then the emerald stages in 3 and esp S&K would've been quite unfair. Conversely, when of approachable difficulty or mastered the sessions are too long (unprofitable), whereas a Capcom/SNK fighter can be 1CC'd in under fifteen minutes and most shmups under 30; whilst there were certainly much longer shmups they tended to be cruel and simply more adept coinsuckers. Shmups also have checkpoints or instant repsawns; platformers normally send the player back to the beginning of the lv, which in the long run makes them far more frustrating.
They're also poorer spectator games and broadly antithetical to cooperative play.
Yeah, the whole point of an arcade game was that you didn't get more bang for your buck(Okay, quarter). They made them flashy and addictive for a reason.
Also, most side scrolling arcade games were hard as hell, to the point that for the most part only the really hardcore wanted to play them. I'm looking at you, Magician Lord.
