Default Video Game Vault: Golden Axe: The Duel

Probably some fans of this game here. I never had a Saturn so I totally missed this game. Was a big fan of the Golden Axe franchise and fighters in general though.

I picked it up recently Jpn import. It is a very hard game! I love the magic system I just can't survive long enough to explore it so far.

Now that is what a good first gen fight looks like unlike Cosmic Crapage. I shoulda bought this game before the prices got a bit out of hand.

This got to be one of the most overlooked and underrated games on Saturn. This and Shin Shinobi Den.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

Underrated is right, I often see people downright slam this game because it's not a beat 'em up like the other golden axe games. Those that can see it for what it is, a 2 player fighting game, will even bash it for "not doing anything new." Which, admittedly, it doesn't. But what it does do, it does well, and sometimes you don't need to reinvent the wheel to be a good game. There is something to be said for refinement.

Sadly, the mindset that "innovation equals quality" seems to have spread. I can't stand that. Just because something is unique doesn't mean it's good, and just because something is derivative doesn't mean it's bad. Those words don't speak of quality, they speak of inspiration.
    A retarded Sonic.
