This thread is setting off my "subjective, nostalgia-tinted bullshit" alarms.

The music was more memorable in RoS than SIII. Other than that they are very different games within the same genre. As sheath says, SIII is about speed; playing the game right makes you feel like you're doing a speed run or time trial. RoS is a different type of game - it forces you to progress through the levels with deliberate care and caution.

I was going to leave this thread alone, but being that its been pretty one sided so far -

Personally I don't think Revenge of Shinobi is better in any areas at all, but admittedly the two games are very different to each other anyway.

RoS goes for a slightly more realistic style, with a hint of B-Movie influence, whilst Shinobi III is more stylish and anime-esque. Shinobi III is an action packed and fast game with fluid controls, whilst RoS is more of a methodical, slower paced title with rigid controls.

Personally I prefer both Shinobi III, and Shadow Dancer to RoS, and by no small degree either. If I'd owned a Mega Drive earlier (as opposed to getting it in 1991) I'd probably appreciate the game a lot more, but in hindsight in that position I'd still rather have held off a few months and bought Strider or Eswat instead.

I like Shinobi 3 more too, but credit must be given where credit is due.

Kamahl is right about the Shinobi and the SoR games.
I'll add what also detracts from SoR3 is the recycling factor, there are so many elements reused that even were they well done the player would still be distracted back to the original material, and any distraction is a break of atmosphere.

Shinobi III's atmosphere suffers for its pace, the lvs just aren't long enough for the speed one races through them. It's pretty comparable to the second world in Mario 3, and that makes for a very small game. Sure the lift lv is more substantial, particularly as it finally introduces the possibility of death for most players, but there's a sort of Sonic Metropolis Zone feeling about putting the lone challenge so late in the game (not saying the lift lv is Shinobi III's final, I just don't recall any challenge afterwards).

The simple fact of being involved in it longer is what lends RoS the advantage of atmosphere; otherwise they'd be near a draw.

RoS has the cooler title screen. Sonny Chiba for the win.

Forgot to mention that, the title screen in RoS is much better.

RoS doesn't do much better than III but it has enemies disguised as nuns. Like with other people, I have a bit of a preference for RoS's soundtrack.

And I wish the GG games and Legions would get more love. They're pretty awesome in their own right.

The music and level design in RoS destroy SIII. When I first got SIII I was really disappointed in the level design. I mean, it begins with a level where you run to the right, then you auto scroll on a horse, then spend eight hours on an elevator. The bio plant was a bit more clever. Then you auto scroll on a surfboard. Then you run to the right again in the burning forest. The exploding floor maze is annoying, but showed some imagination. You get the idea. Every level in RoS was fun and clever and had multiple paths and ways to complete it. You just didn't see that in SIII.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

I also got the Mega Drive in 1991 and RoS is probably my favourite game on the system

On the subject of the 'vehicle' sections in Shinobi 3, at the time I felt they spoiled it somewhat. Then I played similar sections in the new 3DS Shinobi, and all of a sudden SIII's seemed like incomparable genius...

I agree that ROS's music is better, but Shinobi 3 was pretty rockin' as well. The thing that sticks out to me about 3 is that the controls are like butter, it just feels PERFECT. I love love LOVE that game.
