The guitars were obviously(to a guitarist like myself and my friends) were recorded by plugging a distortion effect into a recorder.
There's more compression on the mix on PC engine, and the attack and release controls are set too long. That basically means when one thing gets louder, the rest get quieter and then fade back in.
These are very technical terms, but I'm fond of the technical side of recording music.
I think shred guitar sounds better with reverb, too.
The drums(while I'm sure are still a machine) are also more 'real' sounding on the Mega CD.
The difference is always personal preference with music, but it's best said this way: The PC Engine is a little too simply recorded, the Sega version is a little over-complicated.
The 'tightness' of the PC engine mix is mostly due to the reverb on the Mega CD.
I'll try a little EQ and reverb to see of I can make the PC engine mix sound more like the Mega CD to test that theory.
