By 'over produced' I mean piles of post-amp EQ(and anyone with a real knowledge of sound engineering will tell you that EQ IS distortion. It may not be clipping, but it is a significant alteration of the original signal) 10s of dBs of compression/gating, digital reverb on certain parts...Originally Posted by Joe Redifer

And that whole 'mixing to sound good on sh$% stereo' aesthetic disgusts me.
I mix with a flat system in mind, because I'm recording to...make a record of something.
"This is what happened, this is what it sounded like."
The biggest offense I hear in music today is Compression( mastering compression is bad enough, but that's on top of track-by-track protooling) and over-EQ is a close second. My favorite recording were all done live to 2 track tape with no compression, and virtually no EQ. I know these things because i know he guy who recorded it. he recorded Leo Kottke's first record, and engineered his third. Anyone who knows Kottke knows those are the ones to own. i'm not tooting MY horn. i just know the guy because I shop at his store.
EQ is useful to make up for where a mic may lack or mic placement limitations, but it's used too often to make a band/instrument sound like a totally different thing.
Maybe minibosses like that scratchy guitar sound. I mean, 'Thunderbirds Are Now!' sure do. Ever hear 'Big Black?'
If a band is looking to sound a certain way, that doesn't make them incompetent, it makes them convicted. if you don't like it, that's fine.
I can't stand hearing a Dual Rectifier. So...I don't do that.
