Some better NES soundtracks: Lagrange Point, Ninja Gaiden II, TMNT Arcade, TMNT, Tecmo Bowl, Xexyz, Dragon Warrior, Destiny of an Emperor (!!), Final Fantasy, Bayou Billy, Tetris (though I prefer the GB's for Kalinka), Recca, Sky Shark, SMB3, Star Tropics, Bonk's Adventure, Astyanax.

Zelda's world theme and all Faxanadu are great but that's the extent IGN got right. Contra's and Super C's are good but nothing outstanding.

I'd put Section Z and Life Force above SMB 3 as an example.

That IGN list is bad, to be honest I even think it takes some pretty huge nostalgia to say Super Mario Bros has a notable soundtrack, let alone the best on the system, the dungeon music is atrocious, its like three notes on repeat.

The overworld theme was pretty cool, though a bit on the basic side, I feel like saying that the tune may be "iconic", and "distinctive", but to be honest I'm not sure if that feeling I have is real, or is actually more to do with Nintendo, and the media constantly playing that theme over and over in some form or another for the last 20 years, completely ingraining it into my brain until nothing will shake it loose.

Yea Destiny of an Emperor is another game, with an amazing soundtrack, as well as FF ofcourse.

SMB3 is an answer to IGN's having SM1 at the top; 2's is also better than 1's. I though am of the orthodoxy SMB3 as a game does belong #1 on most lists; not every, just most.

I don't recall Section Z's and Life Force's, they're hidden under sound effects, which is partly why I don't rank the Contras higher as when one picks up the machinegun in either it's dry windscreen wiper time. What's queerer is that no Mega Man soundtrack reached the top 10+8. Not even an honourable mention for the console's 2nd favourite character? Hmmm. Methinks the list made by a secretary.
---Haven't played Moon Crystal in awhile so I'm not sure how the later tracks stack up but going by the first I'd think it should get some consideration as well.

Oh hey, I didn't even know what I was replying to. I assumed that Mario 3 was on the IGN list and just thought that I could think of better soundtracks. Mario 2's track is actually one of my all time favorites though, especially among Mario games.

I doubt anybody does much more than listen to a few tunes on youtube these days. I consider Thunder Force III one of the best Genesis soundtracks, but in game the tunes lose several instruments (and general audio depth) whenever weapons are firing. Lots of games do this really. Including that factor would require a lot more analysis than people seem willing to engage in.

Why didn't they just make a top NES list instead? You have to be beyond biased to think the NES deserves the entire top 10 and all 8 runners up. I wouldn't care if it was some random website but IGN is huge. You would think they would hire people that actually know a bit about video games.

It is true that the NES has significantly better audio than the SMS, though. And let's not even talk about the 7800...

Now maybe there's something on the SMS that deserves to be on that list, sure, but on a purely technical level, the NES does have better music.

Let's move that discussion back to the sound chip thread and see how well it holds up. My own experience says, whatever technical advantages these sound chips had, none of these games exactly produce high quality "music" as anybody outside of 80s gaming would appreciate. Besides that, technical advantages rarely equate to technically better compositions. I doubt any of us are really qualified to argue which 8-bit diddy is technically better from a musical standpoint.

I've played all of them, they're all great games, but I prefer Super Mario Bros 3.

Mega Man 2, and 3 are maybe on par with SMB3 for me though, that would be a difficult decision, I also like Little Samson (not listed) a hell of a lot.

I could never put a beat-em-up in #1 even one as good as River City Ransom, its fun in short bursts but SMB3 can hold my attention for much longer periods of time, and is a much more varied game.

Power Blade is good, but not that notable to me, it doesn't do much to stand out IMO.

That's your opinion. I still stand by the fact that SMB3 is NOT "the best" NES game.

If you want to raise the technical level of the SMS, there's the FM stuff in Japan. Not that I think it matters much for a list that should be more about composition quality anyway. No sane person should be picking Blades of Steel's soundtrack over OutRun or Golvellius'.

Come on why are you kidding yourself, you know damn well 99% of the best 8bit soundtracks are from NES games anyway. The C64 has a few really awesome soundtracks granted, but when 99.99999999999999999999999999% of the library has the worst soundtracks ever, you really can't blame people for overlooking it.

As for the SMS, I hate to say it, but IGN actually said something right for once.

Eddiespruce: Yea those are some great games too.

To topic: It's been a long time, so maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I recall GI Joe(the first one) having especially good music.

Solar Jetman also has a nice soundtrack if I recall.

Having a better sound chip doesn't mean it has all the best soundtracks. That's like if I made a list of the best 16-bit soundtracks, and every single one of them was for Sega CD or Turbo CD.

You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.
