It's an electric guitar, with (You probably wouldn't like Nirvana) distortion. It's later replaced with a keyboard.

It sounds way better than the flat sound of the NES game, with intruments in single layers, while the C64 version has chords.

Both Maniac mansions suck pretty bad.
Yeah, but the C64 version has a nice interlude in the middle.

A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

I played the SMS before I played the NES, so it's not "being trained to prefer what they played the most". It's more of a "the chip is dog shit and to make matters worse it was barely used" kind of problem .

The endings of Street Fighter II and Mortal Kombat are cheesier than the cheesiest B-action movies of the 70s and the 80s. Final Fight? It's a comedy (especially with the Mega CD audio) ! Melodrama, cliched characters and dialogue, plot that makes no sense. Same applies to the much treasured Ninja Gaidens - they are a cheesy ninja movie, the experience of playing the game and their presence as a "reward" makes them awesome. For me the worst action game endings of the 8/16-bit era are those that simply have a no-ending, a "Congratulations you won etc." type of screen. One of the most treasured games from the 90s is Dracula X: Rondo of Blood - fantastic game, but the cutscenes are incredibly cheesy. And awesome. Hard to explain, this cheesiness is part of the charm for 2D action games if the game itself is actually good.

During their lifetimes I always thought the Master System had superior sound, mostly due to the audio depth I heard in games I liked, the percussion and voice samples didn't hurt either. Granted, After Burner, Wonderboy and Action Fighter had mediocre to poor music, but I had played plenty of NES games with the same. I didn't know anybody, and still don't, who ever put either system on a decent stereo or surround sound system aside from myself.

Of course, when I was eleven years old I hadn't taken any courses on music theory, and even today I'm hardly as qualified as some to critique primitive chip tunes with the authority of a wine tester.

Like I've said many times before, SMS & NES were all over the place in Britain in fairly equal amounts (it was ~60/40 in favour of SMS overall, but during some years, such as 1991 the NES was actually more popular for that year).

Most people in Britain who'd had access to both machines didn't even know the NES had a superior chip, they just thought they were different, I remember a lot of people at the time actually saying they prefered the SMS sound, it was the 7800 which was seen as having bad sound.

In retrospect I can say that the NES sound chip is noticeably better than the SMS one, but I don't think I would say that it has significantly better audio, so I would say nostalgia plays a part in enhancing the perceived disparity.

Also a lot of this depends on which games you're playing, its a lot easier to notice the superiority of the NES sound chip when playing games from Sunsoft and Capcom. Those Nintendo made games in the IGN list on the other hand (SMB1, and Metroid) actually sound very simplistic to me, and don't sound like they're using the NES sound chip very much at all, I don't think the SMS has much to worry about against those two games at all to be honest.

I had access to all of these system when I was a kid, to me I prefered the C64 music by a little over the NES, and I prefered the NES music by a little over the Master System, I liked all three much more than the 2600/7800, which I felt sounded very crude at the time.

Even games like Megaman barely use the NES soundchip. They sound good because of the amazing compositions but even the SMS can walk all over that sound quality wise.
Sunsoft, Tim Follin, Konami. Those guys did make good use of the chip, and it's still nothing compared to what someone like RushJet1, Warlord, Danooct1, Fear of Dark or Kulor can do.

The SMS could never do Bass or Drums this good:

Demo's aren't very reflective of anything though, with 100% CPU resource and tons of memory the AY chip in the Atari ST sounds pretty damn good too, that doesn't translate into anything useful for actual gaming though.

Well, both Sunsoft and Tim Follin got pretty close to that ingame, I really don't think it's stressing the CPU much.
