It's about time, SEGA has been brilliant up to this point, it needs to be rebooted before Sonic becomes an empty miserable shell of his former badass self.

Yeah...that's right...SEGA has been all too consistent with Sonic and it's about time something changed. I just hope they finally introduce some new characters.

I thought Unleashed was really bad. The daytime stages are alright but those werehog stages are just painful to play, and that "collect coins to unlock levels!" thing really put me off even bothering to play through the same boring cut & paste rooms that were tedious and horrible the first time around.

Sonic Colors is a good game but it's stages suffered a bit with 2D perspective, Generations seemed to have much less running on a 2D plane in a 3D game thing.

2006 is just downright awful, what a broken shoddy mess.

Despite the validity of this checklist, I really would'nt get your hopes up, it looks like Sega is going to whore Sonic out even more, with this whole Skylanders toy gimmick. You know what the biggest problem is, Sega doesn't really give a damn about Sonic's schizo-phrenic fan-base, Sonic is and was always just a cashcow for kids, but without a system to sell, Sega's priorities are much different. Sonic was previously tempered as a showcase for Sega branded hardware and also an attract demo for kids to nag there parents to buy the systems. Though I wouldn't say Sega was just lucky with the quality of there previous instalment, quality is less relevant now, Sega's titles are no longer in the walled garden of there own hardware, and Sega's profit motive is software. To be honest Sega probably sees this as a great oppurtunity for Sega to dump Sonic's leaden history and aged fans, and allows Sega to treat Sonic like Spyro and Crash, something I've felt they've always aimed for. A perfect cash-cow.

This could go New Coke all over there face though.

That makes since if not for the fact that kids really like the old games too.

The werehog stages are no worse than the knuckles stages in Sonic Adventure. Honestly they're not bad, they're just different. It's not fair to call the game bad just because you didn'f like some of the levels. I'd give Unleashed a solid 8/10.

I always wondered why Sega never went the way of Mario 64 gameplay with Sonic,
I think that could have worked very well, imagine a big island full of caverns and rope bridges and waterfalls and birds flying around,
palmtree's and the badniks roaming around, you solving puzzles and then you fight Robotnik in an epic battle.

Instead its always floating islands and preset running tracks and those bouncy things that catapult you from one island to the next.

I honestly wonder what Sonic could have been if it had been more about exploring the stages, like back in Sonic 1/2/3.

They can do whatever they want, as long as Sonic gets what he really needs: great, solid games that are taken seriously by the hardcore gaming community, the gaming press, and sell well. If Sega makes quality platform games comparable to all the Marios of this world (the recent Sonic games of the last two years were a relief after a decade of decay), Sonic's name is safe I think, no matter whatever else they do with him.
