Live and PSN are big parts of these systems though. Not only do they offer patches and fixes but they also offer DLC, communication, competition, etc.., Could I go back to the beginning when my 360 wasn't connected to Live? Not a chance. It's only half a machine w/o it.

I posted a link that had adiscussion about it. One of the people had posted that he never connected his PS3 to the Internet and was able to play many different games. You guys are making out the whole DLC thing to be more than it is. You think without a decent Internet connection in their home, that someone can't play a PS3? Sorry, that's not true at all. And a fully BC PS3 wouldn't need it either.

If you guys think the N64 would be the first console I'd bring with me as my system of choice, that's crazy talk. There are at least 5 consoles that would be in line in front of it.

You can hate on Sony all you want, but when it comes to a good game selection, there is no equal out there, unless you're talking about a PC.

Your link was from four years ago though and take notice of the few people who mentioned how the PS3 was lacking in online games (compared with the 360) at the time thus making it a bit more offline friendly. A lot changes in four years and the PS3 gained a good head of steam since then. You also had people who thought being online was more beneficial then not. The online aspect of both systems is heavily pushed between MP, DLC, Netflix, etc.., An argument against this would be futile.

Edit: Why did you change what you originally typed?

You can still play just about every 360 game with out internet access. It's not like the games will suddenly stop working when you unhook the ethernet cable. You just wont get updates, DLC, and online multiplayer. However, you wont get that on any other system either without Internet Access.

If I had to pick 5 consoles to have a on a Desert Island I'd pick the following:

    1) Sega Saturn - So many great exclusives and great Arcade Ports
    2) Xbox 360 - Again good exclusives and good arcade ports. Decent amount of Fighters, Platformers, RPGs, to keep my occupied. Not to mention I'd have the XBLA games I already downloaded and they would still work.
    3) Wii - I have the entire Wii Library, the Entire Gamecube Library, plus Virtual Console titles I've downloaded and emulators for the Genesis, NES, SNES, etc. thanks to the Homebrew Channel.
    4) Dreamcast - Again a bunch of great exclusives to keep me occupied.
    5) Playstation 2 - I'd have all the PS2 and PS1 games at my disposal.

Now if emulation doesn't count I'd probably have to make some changes to get the Genesis and SNES in there. N64 would definitely be in my top 10, but not my top 5.

Sony and MS pushing online entertainment has nothing to do with owning a PS3 that offline. Would it really matter, since you're supposedly in a cave without interne access. Games and Blu-Ray would work fine without the internet. Sure, if you have a broken game like Skyrim, the patches would be nice, but the game still worked before the 1st patch.

Have you ever posted from an iPhone? What you thought you had typed, and what appears in your post doesn't always match. I decided to add more since I was already editing it.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

Online capabilities have become more of a push then what we used to see when a single player campaign garnered all attention. Everything now is online this and online that and you know very well you do miss out on a lot whether we talk about leader boards, trophies/achievements, demos, etc.., For example, Dead Rising 2 and it's two DLC installments (Case West & Zero). Although both were XBL exclusives, you couldn't play them unless you were connected. Being online should something which could add to your experience and not something that is almost required these days.

I prefer to use an actual keyboard on a computer for the very reason you mention.

I really don't understand your argument at all. It makes no sense. Are you trying to say that because 360 and PS3 can have content added online that somehow that prevents you from enjoying it's games if you don't have internet access? If you're argument is that without online you can't get new DLCs, new XBLA releases, or play online multiplayer if you are locked in a bunker by yourself with it, well no shit Sherlock. Guess what, you also can't get new games for any other system nor can you enjoy multiplayer on them either because you are locked in a bunker by yourself.

So seriously, what's your argument again?

Maybe I need to use a more rudimentary explanation for you since you are having difficulty keeping pace with a straight forward discussion.

Both the 360 and PS3 rely heavily on internet access for a complete experience whether speaking in terms of features or actual gaming. Following so far?

Without being connected, you miss out on a great deal. Sometimes this effects the actual game whether it needs to be patched, whether DLC is offered and whether you can play with someone other then the computer. Lets use Halo 3 as an example. Do you know what you miss out on if you are not connected to Live? How about GT5 or Forza 4? Most recently, RE: ORC. Last week free DLC was released and a few days ago another batch of DLC was released that have greatly expanded the original game.

Not trying to be offensive but if you still can't follow, maybe this discussion is best suited for the adults.

Edit: Out of the three home consoles, only one isn't dependent on internet access. The other two offer a substantially watered down experience if you are not connected to either Live or the PSN.

I was browsing the earlier pages and I'm reminded of the whole "GC sucks" argument... So, just my thoughts on the subject.

Out of all the first party GC games I've played, many of which I thought were really good, like Sunshine, Double Dash, Paper Mario 2, the Zelda games and such, the best two I'd ever played were Pikmin and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Thing is though, I never played them at release... I got a copy of Pikmin 9 years after it's release and it easily topped any other 1st party GC games I'd ever played before it. In fact, it's one of my all-time favorite Nintendo games ever. Then I got Jungle Beat a bit later, probably in 10/11 sometime... Wow, what a game. I didn't think a platformer could be played with only a pair of bongos, for once I was glad to be wrong. Easily one of the most original GC games I've ever played, alongside Pikmin. I love it's high score edge as well, it's got tons of replay value and an excellent difficulty curve.

So, it's my dumb opinion that the gamecube was and still is a kick ass machine. So many great games for it, two of which are among my absolute favorites. You guys need to stop hating on a game forum and play some Gamecube!

(Yes, Pikmin 2 is a whopping huge improvement over Pikmin 1, but like the original SMB, Pikmin 1 holds a very special place in my heart, it's just so groundbreaking yet simplistic...)

I follow that, but I fail to see how that's different from other consoles when you are locked in a bunker by yourself. So what if you can't download the DLC for a new Xbox 360 game? If you're locked in a bunker you can't even get the new game to begin with. If you already have the game and don't have the DLC, by the time you are locking yourself in a bunker you probably don't care about the DLC or you would have already downloaded it in the first place. The DLC will still work after you've downloaded it and are playing offline. So what if you can't play online multiplayer, you can't even play local multiplayer because, you guessed it, you're locked in a bunker by yourself.

When you are locking yourself in a bunker you take your personal console in it's current state. So the argument of "what if you want to get DLC for a game?" isn't as valid as you probably already have it. The argument of "What if you get a new game and want to get the DLC!" is invalid as well because you're locked in a bunker, you're not getting anymore new games. Heck you probably wouldn't even know of new DLC to know what you're missing if you're locked in a bunker.

If the consoles flat out didn't work or if even the DLC didn't work without an internet connection I could understand, but that's not the case at all here.

I beat StarFox 64 yesterday, it's pretty fun. One thing that I noticed though is how the original SNES game had a better soundtrack. Is it just me or does the SNES sound better than the N64 in general?

The Wii is a system that functions well w/o internet connectivity and places a substantially low emphasis on needing to do so. Nintendo doesn't push this system to the contrary like Sony and Microsoft.

For a system (360 and PS3) that needs this type of access, I wouldn't want to go back to playing with being connected. Another individual said he'd take the PS3 into a bunker with him even w/o high speed net. To me it's like getting a burger without the bun and other accoutrements. That means other accessories or supplements.

Edit: What you are failing to comprehend is that unless you can connect, you are not getting the entire gaming experience. Perhaps if you play a game with strictly a single player campaign, then yes. That's not the truth for the majority of games though.........unfortunately.

The best thing about Star Fox 64 was combo-ing the enemies, and getting all the medals, added a whole other level to the gameplay.

Its you, the N64's lows are higher than the SNES' lows, and its highs are higher too.

The content you are missing from a lack of internet connection is no different from what you miss by taking your Wii into a bunker by yourself. All you are missing are patches and DLC content you probably don't care about by the time you are taking it into the bunker. Your retail and downloaded games will still work fine. And you lose both online and local mutliplayer with all 3 systems. There are Wii games that require patches and system updates just like there are 360 and PS3 games that require them.

It's really not as big of a deal as you are trying to make it.

If I walked up to your 360 and unhooked the Ethernet cable would you suddenly deem the console in its current state not worth playing? As that's pretty much the situation we are talking about here. If you have all the patches and DLC you want on your 360 right now as it is, you won't lose anymore by taking it into a bunker without internet than you would by doing the same with the Wii. That's the point here.

Of course it is much different because the Wii doesn't readily make DLC available. Have you noticed how only now it is becoming more of a topic with Nintendo then ever? Allow me to use Alan Wake as an example. The edition I purchased (not the expensive edition) gives you (for free) another story but I would be s.o.l. if I couldn't get online with my console. That additional portion of the story is part of the game. And that's only one example. Would you consider missing out a large portion of a game as "not a big deal?"

For what I am currently using it for, it wouldn't be useful without high speed DSL because I've relied on Live for quite a few things: Netflix, downloading a few arcade titles, DLC, MP on a few titles, etc.., The same goes for my Vita and to a certain extent, the 3DS.
