Oh my god, I´m going mad right now. I am sitting at work and somehow two older women working with me started talking about violent video games. "Thank God they will be forbidden by law soon. Noone needs something like that!"

I turned around and began to defend video games, and those women were just so stubborn they laughed at every argument I brought up and repeated how much they appreciated forbidding killergames. I tried my best to persuade them, but it was useless. Over 60% of the public here shares their opinion and I feel I´m stumbling in a deep psychic crisis. I´m depressive anyway, and now that the bavarian minister president has made his vision of a law, I´m afraid.
    I am really afraid.
Afraid that it will happen. And afraid that this will only be the beginning...

Never argue with middle-aged women. Most of them don't know what they're talking about and use celebrity gossip magazines for information and, as you discovered, tend to dismiss rational arguments with laughter. Most of them go off on political crusades around the time their eggs dry up - since nature has no more use for them they try and find their own purpose, often to the detriment of everybody else.

I had a somewhat similar argument with a middle aged woman but I won that battle of words.

She spouted off some shit and I returned with a volley of information I had researched for a speech I did on defending video games. Never said a word about it again.

In the long run it doesn't matter...but it sure felt good.

Haha, so true, so true. I win any word battle of politics or similar with my mother, her knowledge of such is so much inferior to mine.

At one point I considered moving to Germany. But after this discussion and evaulating the possibility of what ease further restrictions may be made on completely unrelated things to videogames, I'm glad I canned that idea some time ago.

I knew people who would study German in High School and go on trips to Germany just so they could drink (legally).

Kinda pointless as alcohol isn't that hard to acquire as a teenager.

I had interest in germany both for its culture (i'm both german and have great interest in german history, metal from germany, etc.) and because I'm a fine arts major. In America the only real hubs for art are california and new york, so I was thinking there might be a broader range in germany, as well as more stable politics (ie not involved in tons of wars)

In the end however, I'm always discovering just how germany, and other countries in general, are just as fucked up as america. They just have different problems.

If Utopia existed everyone would live there.

I know the U.S. is far from perfect, but it's home.

No, they usually have the same problems. The language/cultural differences just make it look like there are different problems. :P

    Thank God!
They discussed the law in the Bundesrat yesterday. The Bundesrat is the highest political instance here, and Mr.Beckstein was not successfull. They said that we have the best laws in the world today, now all that is needed is for them to be enforced more seriously. Even the German board of culture and arts has now said that this was a stupid idea. Laws are not meant to forbid bad taste. Every grown up should be allowed to buy crap if he wishes. It´s a matter of the artists´liberty.

Now the first attempt of making "killergames" illegal has failed. Maybe in the end the system will prove to be working after all...?

Just like here, every time they pass one of those laws about video games it gets shot down.

Except here it isn't viewed as "art" its more about freedom of speech/expression.

I'm sure if Germany doesn't ban "killergames" some left-wing liberal from Holland will eventually get the EU to pass a resolution banning "killergames". God I hate hippies.

    Hippies from Holland

That would make a decent band name.
