My cousin was the only person I've ever known to own a Master System. I didn't even know that he had one until I got a Genesis. He did have a couple of games that I was envious of, though. I really liked The Flash television show and was jealous that there was a game for the Master System. Also, I remember Superman being a better game on the Master System than the Genesis because you could fly whenever you wanted to! I liked the Spy vs. Spy game, too, good fun. And Sega made Chess for the Master System but not for Genesis, I never understood that.

Ok, Power Base Converter question time!

Has anyone else experienced the "chaser cartridge effect" with their PBC? I mean, games that don't boot up on their own, no matter how clean they are, but boot up fine if another title is booted up first? So far, I've had this happen with Maze Hunter 3D, Bomber Raid, Rambo III and Penguin Land. They don't boot up by themselves, but work fine if I put another game (usually Kung-Fu Kid) in first. Perhaps the first game "warms up" the PBC or something? It's really weird.

I have not noticed that. I'll have to try that with some of those titles and see if they work the first time. I did have one PBC that almost stopped working completely, though.

agostinhobaroners showed me a Digital Press thread that mentions how PBC converters are inferior to those in MS consoles and tend to die faster, resulting in glitchy play. Changing the capacitors fixes this.

Anyone here ever change the capcitors in a PBC?

I owned a PBC shortly after I got my Genesis way back when and it was a crap shoot whether it would play my carts or not. I never did try starting multiple carts in a row to see if that worked. It was just an exercise of resetting the PBC and messing with the screw on the back to get the Master System game to work.

I would be surprised if the Power Base Converter had capacitors on board, it should just be a simple cartridge pin pass through device. I haven't seen one taken apart though.

Hah, this is the part where I should claim that picture is a fake right.

    Good work man.

NES was the popular console where I grew up but a friend of mine talked me into getting a Master System way back when both were new.
Thinking back it surprises me how willing I was to take his advice without really looking into it myself. So for xmas I got a Sega Master System and even though I had friends who owned the NES with lots of great games I was always so pleased that I had the SMS.

Some of my favorite games back then were:

    Quartet
    Wonder Boy
    Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Fantasy Zone 2 (I rocked my work world when I realized you can blow up the bases!)
    Golvellius
    Miracle Warriors
    R-Type
    Phantasy Star

Interesting, now I know what is causing my pbc to turn on with strange colors and stays with them for like 2-3 minutes.

Back when the Master System was new, I can remember seeing it in various catalogs (namely, the one from Sears) with a screenshot or two for the games that were being sold along with it. At the time, I had my Atari XEGS, which I was enjoying. But man... those screenshots looked so good in terms of graphics. My younger mind could almost picture those images in motion (my imagination made Thunder Blade scale much more smoothly than the actual game ), and I wanted to get the system because of the arcade ports it was getting that the NES wasn't. But, it wasn't cheap at the time, and neither were the games. As such, the XEGS was all I was going to have until I got my Genesis in 1989 for Christmas.

A few years later, a friend of mine sold me his Master System with a few games (Thunder Blade, Shinobi and the Hang-On/Safari Hunt combo). At the time, I knew nothing about the difference between the plugs, and when my old SMS plug died while I was at another friend's house, I tried his NES system's plug. Needless to say, the SMS only lit up for a split second before it died. Thankfully, I had already bought a PBC a year earlier for my Genesis so I could play Phantasy Star (I bought PSII, but wanted to start with the series' first game), which meant I could still play the painfully few games I had (namely PS and R-Type). But that didn't keep me from feeling like a moron at how I'd killed my SMS in such a fashion. Thankfully, I've never made the same mistake again with any system.

A few years I later, found an SMS at a pawn shop that had the 3D glasses and a copy of Zaxxon 3D with it, all for $40. It goes without saying that I bought it, and it's the system I still currently have.

The master system was one of those consoles that I had to backtrack and play roms of to see if I wanted one. Being born the same year it came to America, it never really showed up on my radar until about 6-7 years ago when I was looking more into what Sega hardware I didn't own yet. I was pleasantly surprised by many of the games and while I'd like to own a physical copy of all the ones I want, I may just bypass some of that with the master everdrive. Phantasy Star I'll pay the crazy cash for...but bubble bobble? I love the game but I really can't see myself paying what it goes for. Same goes for various other games like Ghouls and Ghosts.

I am a fan of all sega's stuff. I never had a Master System back when they were released but I did get one a few years ago and loved it. I have Rastan, that Hang On and Astro Warrior double pack,F16 Fighting Falcon (I think that is the name for it.), that one Donald Duck game, and a couple others. I would really like to get Double Dragon sometime.

I was fortunate enough to get an NES and a SMS the same Christmas. My equal love for Nintendo and Sega was born on that day. They each offered games in similar genres that were different enough from each other that I could appreciate both for what they were. Been a multiconsole owner ever since. Teared up a bit when Sega went third party. Likely will do the same when it's Nintendo's turn (and, yes, I can see that coming if NX isn't a success).

Didn't get a 7800 until I became an adult, though. Didn't miss out on much there, but would've been nice to have the trifecta.
