Correct, the light itself makes no difference, it's the loss of the data at that point that matters. If it was on an unused area of the disk it wouldn't matter at all. And depending on the data lost, the console, and the way the game was programmed it could be a minor issue or a complete show stopper.

And a good machine will cost $100+ or much much more, depending on exactly how "good" you want it to be.. The little $20 disk doctor types are not "quality" devices, even if they do sometimes work.
