Oh, snap!
I always enjoyed how Sonic and Knuckles had a modem built into the cart. Way ahead of its time.
Sonic & Knuckles was playable WITHOUT Sonic 3.
That's a big difference.
Its also big enough. It doesn't feel like just content missing from Sonic 3 (even though some of it is) because both games together result to a mammoth game that seems too big for a single cartridge. In that sense it has more similarities to a full expansion pack that is as big as the original game (Something like Starcraft and Brood War, if brood war was playable as standalone) and less to DLC content.
Rockstar did DLC right with GTAIV, massive expansion packs.
Capcom did DLC wrong pretty much every time, people would be alot less sour about DLC if more developers followed Rockstar's example.
I think big publishers are going to be in for a rude awakening in the next few years though. Take a look at this article I found on wired:

Now I don't I agree with it completely, but it's something to think about.
edit: here's another good one that's more OT

DLC is not a bad idea the idea of extending a games shelf-life and fixing some problems, the issue is big companies are so greedy that they cannot help themselves, if they can find a way to exploit their customers they will end of story.
DLC is a terrible idea.
Rockstar's DLC is great. I love the idea of having a spin-off from a main game. Now Capcom did this right in regards to Dead Rising 2: Case Zero! While that came out before the game, it was a nice mini game, dirt cheap too, that added to the experience of the main game.
I completely agree with Rockstar's model. I bought Alan Wake on Steam when it was on sale recently and beat it last weekend. The game itself was more than long enough and I was really happy with amount of content that I received.
They're releasing Alan Wake American Nightmare on Steam in a few days, and I've already preordered it. From what I've read, it's also fairly lenghty and for 12$ it looks to me like it's worth more than what I paid for it, which is awesome!
Capcom though, release DLC the day the damn game comes out, make it costly like 5-6$ for every character in a fighting game, or something that should have been included anyways like the multiplayer mode in Resident Evil 5.
Crapcom sucks, I'm never buying a single product from them again. Making Ultimate MVC3 less than a year after regular MVC3, on disc day one DLC for SfxT, ruining Resident Evil, cancelling MegaMan Legends 3 (part of the reason I bought a 3DS) then announcing Lost Planet 3, because you know everyone just LOVED the first two Lost Planet games. No wonder all the best people in the company are leaving for other studios. Fuck 'em, I'm only giving my money to companies that deserve it.

Yeah, Rockstar is one of the few companies that does it right. Their DLC is more like the PC expansion packs of old, and I wouldn't mind paying a good price for that if I was into the game.
