I think that's one of the reasons FF7 became so popular... it essentially WAS the RPG that not only introduced a whole new console base to the series, but was also the first experience with an RPG for a great deal of people.
It hit just the right audience at just the right time. Prior to it RPG's were that niche genre that only a few people liked... but suddenly ff7 was the cool kid on the block and everyone wanted to hang out with him and wear the same kind of outfits. Love it or hate it, it really did a lot to mainstream RPG's, at least here in the USA.
