Default Need a better 360 controller

Trying to play Sonic 4/Monster World Collection is a nightmare, d-pad's just not suited for these games. Anyone know of a decent controller, with a good responsive d-pad?

I've been looking at the old SFIV Mad Catz pads, but I've heard they're hit and miss quality-wise. TBH, I'd love to have a Saturn-to-360 converter and just use my Saturn pad, but I can't find anyone selling one on Ebay/Amazon.

    Any help/suggestions, guys?

I have one of these, from Hori:

I got it especially for fighting games and 2D games. The d-pad is okay, a lot better than the stock 360 controller d-pad, but it's not my favorite ever either. It works perfectly fine and all, but I'm not a huge fan of SNES-style cross pads. It's not getting much use anymore now, since I mostly use my PS3 for games that require the d-pad.

Have you tried the transforming dpad controller? I don't play 2D games on the console so I never bothered to replace the original gamepads.

I have a Hori pad too, although mine has a 6-button layout. It's solid, and the D-pad is pretty good (although I'm not into the cross-style either), but I don't love it. Every time I go back to using it after playing my Genesis or Saturn, I always feel a bit let down. The good thing about it, however, is that the layout feels pretty natural with both 2D and 3D games (there are actually two sets of L/R bumpers; one on the face and one on the shoulders as per usual).

I also have the official controller with the transforming D-pad, and that's pretty decent. The D-pad is better than the standard controller, and although it isn't as accurate as the Hori pad, being a Sega-esque disc rather than a cross, it does feel better. It's kind of a wash overall compared with the Hori (it depends how badly you want that 6-button layout).

As for the SFIV pad, even though mine has diagonals that don't register without excessive pressure, I'd still have to say that taking a chance on one of those is your best bet. There's nothing on the 360 that's any closer to a Saturn/Genny pad, and if you find one that works like it's supposed to, it should be pretty damn good. I'm actually still considering getting another one in the future.

@Pulstar: I'm using the newest version of the official 360 pad, the dpad's just no good at 2D games. Trying to double tap to run in MWIV is a joke because the dpad hardly registers it, and I just don't find it precise enough at moving the character around as say, a PS1's dpad (yes, that dpad is terrible, but I find it more useable with 2D games than the MS one).

@Devil N & Assman: How much is the Hori? What's the exact name of it?

If I can't get the Hori/it's too pricey, then I'm thinking of doing just that.

Thank you to all three of you, I'm deeply grateful.

if you prefer a 6 button layout like the older controllers, hori released a 6 button pad a couple years ago called the "hori ex 2 turbo" for the xbox 360. I don't own a 360 so I can't say how well it works but it looks like a decent controller.

Woah; just checked how much they want for this on Ebay - £40-60 plus £20 p&p; way too pricey for me.
