Having said that, at least Gamesmaster went to the trouble of having the reviews done by games journalists, rather than small children, like pretty-much all other games shows at the time. *shudder*

I've only seen that kind of stuff on Bad Influence. At least those kids knew that Earthworm Jim was a much better deal than the SNES Power Rangers game.

Well at the time there was a TV attitude of 'kids play the games, therefore kids know what they're talking about'. So you also had people like Ben The Boffin on The Big Breakfast (who rarely knew what he was talking about), Jools on The Net (who rarely knew what she was talking about), and I think there was another BBC kids' show that had reviews by kids.

(I can't remember what the CBBC show was called, it had a CGI female character as host. I had it confused with Reactive, but that was more of a phone-in games show.)

I had to look up this Mario 64 humiliation, and youtube didn't disappoint.



Man, that Dominik Diamond is hilarious. And regardless of whether it was a "set-up" or not, Dave Perry handled it like a real poor sport. It's not like the other guy even played very well! That should have been an easy win for the "Best Games Player in Britain," honestly.

The worst part is you can tell he's still mad about it by his "I've always hated those cutesy Nintendo games" line in the interview KimbleJustice linked to.

Yes, but according to him they were supposed to be playing a neutral game (i.e. a game that neither person had played) for the challenge. He alledges that the guy who won was Dominik Diamond's best friend who was known to have had Mario 64 since its Japanese release and completed it several times, and that the challenge was changed to Mario 64 at the last minute. While sulking on TV isn't too classy, if what he says is true (and I'm pretty sure it hasn't been denied) then he may have had a point about being set up.

True or not, it's still no excuse. He was just acting like a big baby because he couldn't have things he's way and threw a fit. In front of millions of viewers. Guy deserves all the hate he gets.

Considering the "guy who owned the game" completely sucked at it too I think he's really blown the whole stupid thing out of proportion as a way to justify his on-air temper tantrum.

I always seem to remember Games Master being biased against Sega; anyone else? I do remember them loving Panzer Dragoon Saga though. I wonder if Nintendo's evil hand was manipulating the show to an extent..?
