It was a great movie. The only thing I hated was much of the ending. I felt like it was pointless, and even worse, detracted from the real climax of the movie that happened just before it.
A 5 - 10 minute cut from the ending would make the movie a much more complete package.
But Goodman was phenomenal in it no matter what.
Yakuza: Like a Dragon
It's basically a harshly abbreviated version of the first Yakuza game, lamentably only for fans of the series, as there is ZERO setup or background exposition for the characters, their relations, their motivations, or personalities.
Wasted my time on The D Train the other night. In general, it was a despicable, morally bankrupt turd, even by Jack Black standards.
Wife and I bought the latest Underworld: Blood Wars movie last night. We hadn't watched it before, but we had a lot of fun with it! Much better or rather more enjoyable to watch compared to the previous film Awakening. Plus, it never hurts that Kate can still fit in that wonderful outfit! But the action to us was better than the previous film. The story is very thrown in honestly, but we like this series for the action and lore more than anything.
In cinema: Guardians of the galaxy 2 << Not bad
At home: Platoon << classic
I watched Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I liked part 1 better only because I felt it was more epic and "galactic". But this one was just as fun. I think Chris Pratt has managed the same screen presence as Robert Downey Jr. in the Marvel Cinematic Universe; and that's saying a lot. I can't wait to see them on the same set in Infinity War.
9 out of 10 movies I see being released are ones I wouldn't watch if given a free ticket. IMO a lot of the quality and lack of originality stems from the constant releasing of movies each and every weekend. Just think if Nintendo or MS or 2K had to release a new game every few weeks.
^That's always been the case, though. To be fair, it's not like every major movie studio is churning out a movie every few weeks, though. And frankly, for every good movie there are hundreds more terrible ones. It is also a lot easier to make a two hour movie than a good AAA game.
I just saw Guardians 2, and I actually liked how much smaller the story was.
And it only introduced one new character! Woot woot!
It also occurred to me that Disney once sued Marvel over Howard the Duck ... and now they own him.
I vaguely remember this video. Some esoteric choices here, but I have to agree with him for the most part. Maybe not inclusive of my personal top 20 from 92 to 2009, but at least some of my top films of all time as well. And some actually do make it to my top 20, tbh:
And, yes, The Host was a superb film; and most definitely my favorite foreign language film of all time thus far.
1. Battle Royale (his favorite)
2. Anything Else (Dir. Wood Allen 2003).
3. Audition (Dir. Takashi Miike 1999).
4. The Blade (Dir. Hark Tsui 1995).
5. Boogie Nights (Dir. Paul Thomas Anderson 1997).
6. Dazed & Confused (Dir. Richard Linklater 1993).
7. Dogville (Dir. Lars von Trier 2003).
8. Fight Club (Dir. David Fincher 1999).
9. Friday (Dir. F. Gary Gray 1995).
10. The Host (Dir. Joon-ho Bong 2006).
11. The Insider (Dir. Michael Mann 1999).
12. Joint Security Area (Dir. Chan-wook Park 2000).
13. Lost In Translation (Dir. Sofia Coppola 2003).
14. The Matrix (Dir. Andy Wachowski & Larry Wachowski 1999).
15. Memories of Murder (Dir. Joon-ho Bong 2003).
16. Police Story 3: Super Cop (Dir. Stanley Tong).
17. Shaun of the Dead (Dir. Edgar Wright 2004).
18. Speed (Dir. Jan de Bont 1994).
19. Team America (Dir. Trey Parker 2004).
20. Unbreakable (Dir. M. Night Shyamalan 2000).
From that list, I would place the following on my top favorite films (of which there are hundreds), but likely not in my top 20 (with the exception of perhaps The Matrix and Unbreakable):
Fight Club
The Host
The Matrix
Shaun of the Dead
Speed
Unbreakable
Other movies from the list I've also watched and I also consider really good, just not my top favorite:
1. Boogie Nights (Good for one watch).
2. Dazed & Confused (A great coming of age film. But it's one of those things where you just grow out of it).
3. Friday (Really hilarious. But it feels too heavy at times. I rather enjoyed the Wayans bros. satire much better and had way more laughs with it).
4. The Insider (Likely a good movie. Just not for me. This is the kind of film I try my darnest not to watch. It's just not my cup of tea. Political intrigue and courtroom procedurals just don't quite entertain me. Which is probably why I don't like most Spy Films; especially the Bourne series. Seriously, I fell asleep at the movies during the last Bourne film; one of only two times in my life. Which is saying a lot, since I've watched thousands of films at the movies).
5. Lost In Translation (I can watch this movie over and over. It is so relaxing. I loved it).
6. Police Story 3: Super Cop (I admit this is a must buy for me, as well as a must watch. Just not top favorite material. But the action scenes were just stupendous. I still love this film, though).
7. Team America ("Testing. Testing. 1-2-3... Lorenzo Lama... La la la la la la)
Anyone planning on watching the new Alien movie? I just seen this review of HCG's new channel where he does movie reviews with Victor Lucas;
Planning to watch Alien: Covenant? Yes.
Planning to watch first impressions before I make-up my own mind? No.
I do look forward to general podcast-style conversations between the two of them on that new channel regarding older movies, though. 'Don't know if that'll ever happen. At least not for now.
I wouldn't if I were you. Supporting these type of reboot/remake/sequel movies is just creating more demand for trash.
