One of the best games on the genesis, and hell yes! that flying level was LONG!
too old for video games huh?
The graphics were stellar for any similar hardware. Only Red Zone and Ranger X even come close that generation.
I have to admit though, I have never gotten past level 3 in this game. I think I love it because of how agile Batman is, it really is possible to avoid hits, but then I have to restart the game and just don't.

The whole game was like a bullet hell shooter.....only a side-scroller with limited character mobility. That and its always in boss mode difficulty.
I'd like to put it in the Run 'n Gun genre, but with the flawed control theres not a whole lot of running and gunning to be had. None in fact.
Edit: OMG those shooter stages just dragged on FOREVER.
Cool game, but it's also a total fucking asshole. I agree with Saturn Fan that it seems unreasonably difficult. Normally with enough tries I can manage my way through a fair portion of a game regardless of how tough it supposedly is, but I still don't think I've ever beaten the first boss on this god damn game.
Its a good thing there was a stage select code or else the vast majority of those who played the game would never have even seen the 3rd stage and beyond.
I remember when the AVGN brought up this game in his SNES Vs Genesis video, and i saw him on the 6th stage! Either he put in a gameplay vid from elsewhere, or he used a stage select code to get there, but there is no way he made it to that point legit on his own lol.
This game has always kicked my ass, but it also took me a long time to warm up to it.Levels are long as others have said, and there are parts where you hit a part and must defeat every enemy to move on.
Not a bad game, the soundtrack thumps for sure, just as magazines said back in the day, it's very difficult.
I wouldn't completely assume he cheated he's pretty good at Run 'N Guns, even preferring Hard Corps to Contra III, which is why it surprises me that he doesn't seem very interested in shmups. Though yeah, I wouldn't doubt he used the code to get footage for the video.
It's a very hard game but once you figure out how to play it, it's beatable. The really challenging part is having the endurance to make it through the whole game in one sitting. It's something I've never done anyway.
No, just no. Theres challenging games.... and then theres batman & robin. Its not just the broken difficulty but the game also suffers from clumsy control issues making it even harder than it should be, and some stages that just dragged on for far longer than they ever should have.
Then the flying levels. Your craft moves so sloooooow and there are a bazillion fast projectiles coming that often you'll simply be unable to get out of the way. Unless you have some magic "foreknowledge" of them being fired before they are(AKA: emu save state use) but even then they're still really tough to avoid.
The game designers did great from graphics standpoint, but someone else should have been in charge of the actual gameplay and levels design. They didn't know what they were doing and went overboard.

This game isn't THAT hard. I used to think it was nearly impossible as a kid but I picked it up again a few years ago and couldn't believe how many enemies drop health when you kill them. Nowadays I can beat it with only 1 death on that stupid stage where the crazy flashy neon dolls fly all over the place in the Mad Hatter level. The shmup stage is entirely too long, I timed it the last time I played and it took about 16 minutes, but it also is really not much harder than the average shmup and when you consider the big lifebar it is really much easier. Every boss follows a pattern and they can all be beaten without taking a hit, there are youtube videos of every boss being beaten without taking damage using the crappy blue weapon. Speaking of weapons, the green weapon will make your life quite a bit easier especially for dealing with bosses. The orange weapon is good too for having a wide spread, but I would just avoid that blue weapon altogether.
I've always wished there would be some kind of remake of this game that would shorten some of the levels (cut the shmup stage in 1/3 lol) and spruce up all of Mr. Freeze's stages because they are pretty much barren and boring. I'm not really a fan of the other type of flying stage where batman is using a jetpack or whatever but then again those stages seemed to just have 1 type of enemy attacking you one at a time, although I did like this style for the final boss fight. I would just cut one of those stages out and make the other one more exciting.
Those vids of them going through the stages without much effort, are by those players who've spent countless hours learning this game's crappy system, controls, and the best ways around stuff. Not just any fan who is otherwise very proficient in the Run 'n Gun genre, will be able to pick this up and do well.
Another crucial thing to note is because these players know the game, they don't die anywhere near as much. As such they hold onto their fully POWERED UP WEAPONS from area to area.
OMG....try playing the last stage(the jetpack one in the blue corridor before freeze) after dieing and restarting with your depowered, stock weapon. No sir. Might as well shut the game off.
So many enemies that take tons of hits to put down, and dodging their fire is next to impossible.
It took me only 5 tires to finally beat the game, stop whining.
***Visualshock! Speedshock! Soundshock! Now is time to the 68000 heart on fire!***
Only 5 attempts? Don't believe you. This game is borked from start to finish with brutal difficulty, slow moving characters, and terrible control.
Not being able to continuously shoot and run at the same time? In a bullet hell game? WTF.
Imagine a traditional jet/spaceship bullet hell shooter, where your ship moves dreadfully slow, limited mobility on the screen, have to remain in one spot to fire continuously, and your shots do mediocre damage unless they're fully powered up. That is the B&R experience.
*barf*
