I always rushed after the hearts. At my third attempt I knew which enemies would throw me hearts. That and also I was lucky enough to get a couple of extra lives throughout the levels. I love games that are hard but have that type of difficulty that just makes you more focus and keep on going, like R-TYPE III.

I got a tough mind in these type of situations.

I believe him, because I beat it in 3 tries. Now, who beat it in his first sitting?

Just avoid the blue weapon at all costs, shoot all kinds of places to get hidden extra lives and power-ups, learn the patterns of bosses and move it.

I completed it after maybe ~15 attempts I'd say. Certainly no more than 20.

Yep, I did so in this amount or less, and each of those tries was spaced far from the last because I odiate this game. I only played through it because I was tired and Sin & Punishment Star Successor was beating me senseless (same reason I played through Dynamite Headdy). It controls fine, just a little slow in turnarbouts--a misguided sense of momentum perhaps. There are plenty of games where one death can practically mean a game over; I don't think AB&R is harsher than Contra or Super C, much less old shooters.

I agree, I think the original contras (without the konami code) are harder.

Finally beat this game!! The trick is powering up your weapon to maximum and NEVER dieing(or you'll lose it and its game over). As the game progresses onward, enemies not only flood the screen but progressively get a LOT stronger in regards to the hits they can take. You (with max power)need to be able to destroy them as soon as they pop up each time before they unleash their hailstorm on you.

If you die during a stage in one of such later levels, you might as well reset the game. Your depowered stock weapon will not be able to take them down anywhere near fast enough, all the while they are wailing on you.

Of the the last segments of the game where you're on the jetpack in that blue corridor breaks the game on its own. Enemies are so tough that should you die and become depowered, thats it. Does not matter how many continues you have either, you'll just get brought back to the same area with your pitiful weapon only to die horribly again. Since enemies flood the screen with bullets/steam there is no dodging either.

So you can do great and make it all the way up to freeze, screw up and its a hopeless situation. Pretty pathethic.

And i didn't even mention this game's mediocre controls. Not being able to seamlessly shoot & run around at the same time like in other games, artificially ramps up the difficulty in an already harsh title and hurts the experience.....

Some of you are gaming gods. I've never made it past stage 1 and I've tried really hard numerous times.
    Babies...the unfortunate by-product of a good time.

You're describing pretty much any OHKO shooter with that, except AoB&R gives you a really big lifebar and tons of health powerups. Bit of a difference.

No sir. Other shooters you can die once and still do well. Not this one in certain segments.

You have a lifebar.... but the enemies have big lifebars of their own. Everything hinges on you and your maxed out weapon being able to take them out as soon as they arrive on screen. Because due to this game's borked sense of "challenge" regarding enemies, you will NOT be able to evade their fire once they get going.

The jetpack stage with freeze is the most brutal example of this. Lose your powered weapon and your stuck fighting a ton of high health enemies flooding the screen with shots and little to fight them off with. They might drop health when they're beaten but not all of them, and that won't happen often anyway with your crap weapon, and you'll be losing a lot more in the process. Terrible.

You've really only got 1 shot at freeze. Upon continuing if you die, you get dropped right back into that jetpack segment fully depowered at square one. Does not matter how many continues you have remaining, you've no chance.

    That looks badass.

And I agree with Kamahl, many Amiga games may have looked more colorful (albeit mostly by using copper gradients until the cows come home), but you'd be hard pressed to find a single one with even a similar amount of special effects, the Amiga's GPU simply wasn't as good at scrolling action games, most Genesis/MD to Amiga ports are missing the majority of their special effects and also lack linescrolling as a result.

Still, despite the mind-blowingly amazing graphics, I've never been able to play Batman & Robin for more than ten minutes, it's simply not that fun to me.
