"In a shoot 'em up, the player controls a lone character, often in a spacecraft or aircraft, shooting large numbers of enemies while dodging their attacks. The genre in turn encompasses various types or subgenres and critics differ on exactly what design elements constitute a shoot 'em up." - Wiki
I would say that definition fits all 3 that I have listed. Not to mention that if you type in "Run and Gun" in Wiki's search, it brings you BACK to "Shoot 'em ups".![]()
You make a point but when I originally posted I didn't really think run n gun games would be included. The reason not is because most run n guns you control when the screen scrolls as where most Shumps the screen scrolls automatically. Notice I said MOST. I know there are exceptions, and you can post run n gun games if you really want, but all I am saying is I think you know what kind of games I meant when I asked originally. I am not trying to be mean and I'm sure people would like to know everyone's favorite run and gun games, just not really in this thread![]()

The sites I've been to that deal with shmups as their main topic generally wouldn't include games like Contra, Alien Soldier, Midnight Resistance, the Metal Slug series, or Ranger-X as a shmup. In fact, those same places wouldn't allow games like Galaxy Force II or After Burner II either. And really, Wikipedia isn't exactly a rock-solid source to use to make an argument with (user-made content that can be edited at any time by other users, at times biased info, at times flat out incorrect info, etc.). And really, if anyone thinks Thunder Force IV and Metal Slug 3 play the same, then they're not paying attention to what they're playing.
The two genres (shmup and run 'n gun) may share similarities, but they're not as interchangeable as Wikipedia makes them out to be.

run'n'guns aren't shmups
I guess I'd have to go with:
Whip Rush
M.U.S.H.A.
Thunder Force III
Not counting After Burner II that is.
"... If Sony reduced the price of the Playstation, Sega would have to follow suit in order to stay competitive, .... would then translate into huge losses for the company." p170 Revolutionaries at Sony.

According to whom? Not Wiki & I don't believe anyone here has redefined the term officially either, neither on Wiki nor elsewhere.

Wiki is the ONLY official online source (but how did I know someone was going to use that as an argument?) But let me guess, someone here is going to change that? Not someone who has to imply that I can't distinguish between styles of shooting games as an argument. That's so far gone from the point. If you're so certain about two terms that don't have an indefinite meaning then you should go edit Wiki yourself.Needless to say, the site you mentioned seems to be more focused on semantics and control than participating in fun threads about gaming. Guess it makes sense that you visit it.

Believe it or not, my comment about not telling the difference between TF4 and MS3 wasn't about you. That was a general comment on the subject at hand, and the Wikipedia authors who seem to think the two genres belong together on one page. That's why I used "anyone" and not "you." So if you thought I was addressing you specifically, I wasn't, and I apologize for the confusion. Rest assured, if I wanted to make a comment about you, it would be as plainly visible as the snide and condescending remarks you made toward me.
As for shmups.com, the site's fine if you avoid the occasional semantics arguments (which did get heated back in the day). It's not exactly a lively place due to its narrowed subject matter, but that changes from time to time with the tournaments that generally prove to be fun (except this past one, where the "falseificare" brigade arrived toward the end to throw a wet blanket on things). That said, the arguments there have made sensible points about the two genres being pretty distinct. R-Type isn't Contra, and Raiden II isn't Mercs. The two genres may combine in some games (like Gun.Smoke and Atomic Runner), but they're usually different enough to warrant being in their own categories, rather than simply offshoots of each other that fit under one name.
