Are you talking about the same Genesis that has Thunder Force III, Thunder Force IV, Steel Empire, Gaiares, Whip Rush, Air Buster, Gley Lancer, Eliminate Down, Elemental Master, Sol-Deace, Viewpoint, Undeadline, Super Fantasy Zone, Twin Hawk, Zero Wing, Hellfire, Wings of Wor, Grind Stormer, M.U.S.H.A., Bio-Hazard Battle, Fire Shark, Truxton, Forgotten Worlds, Raiden Trad, Phelios, Sagaia, and other good-great shmups on it?
Currently Reviewing: Desert Strike (SMS), Galaxy Force (SMS)

I owned zero Shmups growing up with the Genesis and only got fond of them thanks in part to Starfox, Fantastic Parodius, Space Megaforce, and Pop N' Twinbee.
So honestly, even one Shmup on the Genesis is news to me, but I have downloaded a huge pack of them from some weird site and am going through them at my leisure.
The only ones I'm really enjoying so far are Twinkle Tale, Elemental Master, Super Fantasy Zone, and Trouble Shooter

You definitely missed out, as the Genesis has a very nice library that ranges from a few cute'em ups, to heavy sci-fi hitters. Side scrolling shmups got more attention on the Genesis, but there are a healthy number of vertical ones as well. Here are a few of the enjoyable ones (IMHO) to get your feet wet...
Side scrolling- Thunder Force III (very easy, and Thunder Spirits for the SNES is a sub-par port of this game and Thunder Force AC), Thunder Force IV (arguably the best 16-bit shmup made, also called Lightening Force), and Steel Empire (cool steampunk-centric designs).
Veritcal scrolling- M.U.S.H.A. (made by the same folks who did Space Megaforce), Fire Shark, and Elemental Master.
Cute'em up- Super Fantasy Zone, and Trouble Shooter 1/2 (they're really halfway between being a cute'em up, and a "serious" shmup, also called Battle Mania)
Borderliners- Twinkle Tale, Sub-Terrania, Granada.
Edit: Shit. You edited your post after I quoted you![]()

How about instead of platformers we go with pacing, controls, and general oddity?
The MD hasn't the SFC's abundance of slower paced (exploratory or not) adventure platformers. The superior Flashback and Another World help, as I feel does Generations Lost which isn't widely popular, but the MD's geared towards adrenaline play. As to oddity Trouble Shooter's about as queer as any decent MD exclusives get, barring perhaps Rolo, but the SFC has games like Holy Umbrella, Snoopy Concert, Jelly Boy, Uniracers, Jungle no Ouja, and lots of strangeness in its RPG roster including several Shin Megami games. Even the mechanics of YI are pretty out there. The SFC's controls more often seem to be tailorable, which matters a lot to me, and whilst the shoulder buttons aren't available half so often as they should be full MD 6 button functionality is even less.
I'd also go with racing on SFC. MD of course gets the generic action label.
Haven't put much thought into who has the oddest library
Puggsy, Wiz N Liz, Bubba N' Stix, Haunting Starring Polterguy, and Toejam and Earl are pretty odd
These days I tend to think they're both pretty awesome for general exploratory adventure games, I like Tides of Time, Landstalker, and Starflight too much to dismiss them, haven't thought much on platform adventure games specifically though.
Racing I pretty much wholly prefer on SNES, though I like Micro Machines 2 a lot and the SNES version of that is pretty much ass.
Yeah it sounds like a pointless, offhand classification but one does like surprises and curiosities.
You're right about Polterguy, that's a game I always neglect. Need to spend some time on that. TJ&E's oddity/humour feels forced; its play's unique. Those other I don't much care for; not that Holy Umbrella on SFC is great. Shadow of the Beast might qualify too.Puggsy, Wiz N Liz, Bubba N' Stix, Haunting Starring Polterguy, and Toejam and Earl are pretty odd
Well, cheers then I suppose. FWIW the Sonics fulfill this category pretty competently too; I didn't mean expressly platformer adventure games, this is something that's mulled with my bit about oddities, it's nice to pick up a game and find it larger and more leisurely than one expected. These days I tend to think they're both pretty awesome for general exploratory adventure games, I like Tides of Time, Landstalker, and Starflight too much to dismiss them, haven't thought much on platform adventure games specifically though.
Don't forget S.o.S (Not sink or swim).

Fantastic Dizzy is pretty much as leisurely as it gets![]()
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts is pretty much THE home version IMO.
