---NFL Football games likely won't offer this, but when Passwords are available and can be found online using one to skip to the playoffs is allowed and the player takes over from there (just a few games).
---When skipping or condensation is unavailable 1 regular season game of Default length and difficulty must be won.
---NBA Jam and NBA Jam TE, being very short, desirable (fun), arcade style games to begin with, must be beaten in their season entirety. The main reason for this suggestion is that they are still widely played by most Genesis owners thus it would be shabby to skimp on them, and that in them each opponent is faced only once.
---Arcade style games should adopt a completion approach closer to NBA Jam's. When they don't let's dispatch with them as we will the sim style games, ie 1 match.
---Miscellaneous sports games such as billiards, Olympics, Track and Field, etc, should follow their in-game parametres for completion.
^I cosign this, at least in principle, but can we find any more info out about the specific options in each game? It'd be good to know which games do indeed offer direct-to-playoffs, and which ones use a shortened season, so that we can matchmake a bit.

Also, I'm inclined to say tennis games should use a more stringent standard, i.e. win all four Grand Slams or reach World #1, but maybe that's just me. Still, those usually have well-defined, protagonist-y endings.

I agree. I will play Mutant League Football in the Championship mode( or Playoffs mode, cannot remember its in-game term)

You might want to start a new thread to definitively nail down the Sega Channel exclusives? That might attract knowledgeable posters who won't be interested in this thread but would hop on a thread with "Sega Channel" in the title.

QuickScifi and Spaceflea, would you check your sports games? Only singling you two out as there aren't many participants with many CIB sports games: all you should need to check is the manual for Playoff/Championship Mode and Password features. The rest of us can of course check ROMs but sometimes manuals are clearer; that's also a lot of ROMs to selectively download (I strongly doubt there are any Genesis Sports ROMsets floating around).

Also, I'm inclined to say tennis games should use a more stringent standard, i.e. win all four Grand Slams or reach World #1, but maybe that's just me. Still, those usually have well-defined, protagonist-y endings.
If Slams can be skipped to I'd say yes, that would be tantamount to other sports' abbreviated Playoff Modes. However, if the Slams require qualifying and seeding tours (the ATP events) I'd say winning any single Slam should suffice. That's still a lot of sport right there. This path would effectually rule out concerns about world ranking as reaching #1 would be more work than winning a Slam. Winning all 4 Slams...in 1 year? You might as well say every US football gamer must go 19-0. Who knows, some of the tennis games might even employ ranking (in the shooter sense) to impede such spectacular achievements.

If it's an option other than "practice" mode, then I'd say why not. It's part the game's menu and no cheats or codes are being used. As for the use of passwords to "skip to things", I wouldn't condone it myself.

I'll see if I can find some time to check my sports games for these features.

For multi region games would it possible to maybe underline ones that must be US copies?

You mean the ones that had extreme changes when they were ported (i.e.-Last Battle, Dynamite Heady, Contra: Hard Corps, etc.)?

I don't think it has yet been agreed-upon whether "unchanged" multi-region titles can be done; but I definitely vote so that our brethren from overseas can partake in this.

I am wondering how NintendoAge handled the sports game then? If we are to tailor our attempt at this on theirs, we should probably follow the same rules.

Their thread is here, but they had a big advantage in the form of AdamL's list of NES game endings, which codifies ideal win conditions for a lot of games. It's not 100% accurate but it's a great resource. We badly need something like this for Genesis!

OK taking a look at what they have, it seems NES baseball games were not really so full fledged like the ones from the 90s. Here is one quote from someone there:

Took care of Baseball Simulator 1.000 tonight. I did a 5 game season, the shortest possible
So it looks like if the options for having a short season (and probably get away with 5 minute quarters/3 inning games) for these long sports championship ones, it would work out. That is also good because *gasp* what if you DID a full season in say Baseball or Hockey and then lost the final game of the championship!! That would suck for sure!

But then again, that same user decided that a single game (John Elway's Quarterback) was enough to consider it "beaten."

I really like how they have posted pictures of the end/kill screen with a peice of paper with their screen-name on it. It would be even more daunting a task, but I feel this should be picture or video submissions only. Not sure how feasible that is for everyone who wants to participate.

I totally hate sports game and dont have any of em, i get rid of em compulsively but i think i may still have Mario lemieux Hockey somewhere... I kept it because i actually kinda liked this one, probably because half the game is beating the other teams in fist fight ( lol ) . If i have to do a sport game i guess that would be this one. I dont claim it yet but i may not be able to do any other sport game, its the only one i have ( And im not gonna play a game on the emulator )

^Agreed. BTW a ROM set can tell you whether there've been any changes, since if it's (UE) or (JUE) then the ROMs are the same in those regions. If it's just a language change that's fine too.

Absolutely, and I think that's the preferred standard. I checked a couple of the Tecmo games, and it looks like they offer the upfront option of either a full season mode (which looked to involve dozens of games, at least, for baseball) or a single exhibition/championship game. When that's the choice, the single game should be fine, though if anyone wants to do the full season that's welcome, of course.

Agreed that it's strongly preferred, but I don't want anyone losing out because they found out too late that their camera battery wasn't charged.

Mario Lemieux would be great. Keep in mind that we have a lot of posters with tons of unwanted sports games, so if you want one I'm sure there has to be someone who'd send it to you for the cost of shipping, or maybe even for free if you commit to beating it (but I wouldn't expect that).

Well, I agree, I live in Europe so I own pal, us genesis and japanese games in my collection, however all the 3 games Iīm "doing" are pal.

IMO every offcially released game should be considered, this would not be a problem with european pal games I guess, but harder with some japan only games, but still there could be people here with those games that are japanese or can read japanese

Im sure thereīs people here that would love to have a shot at Donaldīs Maui Mallard and panorama cotton for example

About games with relevant differences between regions where they were released, and even this is a genesis released only thing I would propose they would be given different entries to the list, I give a simple example why I think it should be that way: thereīs quite a difference in difficulty between streets of rage 3 and bare knuckle 3 ( same with contra/probotector), so I think each version should be given a go by different people.
May the 16bit power be with us
