I don't understand why people rag on PSX so much these days.

I don't get it either. Blocky/pixelly 3d games don't bother me at all. They can still look good if the art direction's there.

What bothers me more is the full screen dithering. I play my PS1 games on my PS2 these days through component, and the dithering is really hideous. Honestly I'd say most Saturn 3D games have aged better than PS1 3D games. For example compare Virtua Fighter 2 to any of the Tekkens. VF2 looks crisper, smoother, and just better than the 3 Tekkens on the PS1. VF2 still surprises me every time I boot it up because it still looks great. There's very few PS1 games you can say that about.

Not all Playstation games use full-screen dithering. I do agree about VF2, though I would extend that to Saturn 3D fighters generally.

I think most Psygnosis games look good, and most Squaresoft games (not FF7), and most 2.5D games, and games that were relatively simple to begin with (like Descent), and games that have 2D sprites in 3D environments, and vice-versa.

Agreed, wholeheartedly. PSX has a great library, probably tied with the Genesis for me as my favorite system.

I can't really say the early 3d bothers me that much, I still enjoy some of the early ps1 and saturn 3d games.

Can't say I'm much bothered with standard western dev fare on PSX, but I would like to one day get a decent import selection.

    Saturn + PSX NTSC-J libraries = 32-Bit Japanese mecca

I just love that early swathe of quality Arcade conversions when the Saturn duked it out with PSX, big bold simple shaded polygons, and pick up and play addictive. Bring back blue sky gaming!

Same with me. Never find any Dreamcast games tho... just PS1 games. And the people who work at those stores usually ring them up as CDs, but sometimes they charge them at the "game" price. I always like to check the blank/slim cases because I find PS1 games in those quite often. The last one I found a Tekken 3 in a pink slim case.

It still strikes me as odd when people call Playstation and Saturn "early 3D". To me, "early 3D" is games like Hard Drivin' and Hunter.

when I was referring to early 3d for ps and saturn, I meant the early titles on the systems and not 3d games in general. I know there were 3d games way before the ps and saturn existed, I probably should have worded my last post a bit better.

After re-reading your post I can see how you meant that. Still, it was good opportunity to state one of my pet peeves.

Some of you guys sound like Nintendo fanboys talking about the Genesis. The PS1 is a great system with a lot of cool games. If you can't find anything to play then your not looking.

That's cool if you don't care about it.... a store locally had a BOGO deal for a certain price but nothing really that I really wanted that I didn't own. Not saying that the library is all gold and grand as there is a lot of fluff but tons of cool games like Gekido, Trap Gunner that most people haven't heard of. I'm sure people have but damn fun games.
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...

Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

I like dithering even at super crisp detail levels.
