Plus The Immortal has that same cool "it's an experience" vibe about it like Shadow of the Beast and Chakan have.

It's really difficult and cryptic as hell, though. Not the most playable game by any means.
I guess the same goes for SOTB and Chakan, incidentally.

Really difficult and cryptic as hell aren't necessarily flaws. I grew up with '80s computer games so I was used to that. I loved The Immortal on Genesis back in the day. I managed to beat it relatively quickly from what I remember.

Now that I said that, it wouldn't surprise me if I find it super hard next time I play it.

It hurts playability, though. '80s computer games were like that due to hardware limitations.

The difficulty is in the game's design on the NES and Genesis. You aren't supposed to find the puzzles easy, that isn't a hardware limitation.

I think it was more often a design decision to let the player explore or solve puzzles. The designers could have easily stuck in flashing arrows telling players what to do like in current gen games if they wanted to.

I know, because they aren't '80s games. In The Immortal's case, it's a design flaw. Why is the combat system so convoluted? Why aren't there better item descriptions? Certainly not a hardware limitation; just lazy programming.

The Immortal is the only game from that era that allowed blade controls by direction and target, that was pretty ahead of its time and I always found it intuitive if not a little unresponsive at first. As for the item descriptions, that was a common issue back then too and what the manual was for.

    This.

MrSega shouldn't be allowed to create threads. Well, he shouldn't be allowed to have "Sega" in his nick to begin with...

Definitely years ahead of its time. I've grown up to love isometric (hack 'n slash) games, partly due to having played this game and hoping for a game just like this to come out, except better.
Luckily, in '96 we got Diablo.

Diablo doesn't have puzzles and real time combat anything like The Immortal though. For combat I'd say Die by the Sword comes close to the combat in real 3D, it's actually probably an expansion. Old school puzzles like in the Immortal are a thing of the past though.

We need more games like Die by the Sword and Trespasser, where you have complete controll over one arm
Would be perfect on the Wii.

All I can think of is Batman Forever (on both consoles).

Batman Forever is one of those games that should have never been made to begin with.

Die by the Sword would have been perfect on the Wii or even the Kinect. I can't believe how incompetent developers are today, and how ignorant of their heritage. There's something wrong when Fruit Ninja is the best slashing cutting game out there.
