Actually, that was just those puppets, and promotional art based off of them (only one I'm aware of is that NP cover). In-game (the continue screen) they're definitely boots.
Also, just wanna state I love the original Starfox. I loved it as a kid, but then I started loving 64 a little more when it was released. However, these days I think the original is definitely the superior game. I love the creativity in the levels, themes, music (it's one of my favorite VG soundtracks for sure), graphics and design, it has great atmosphere, and I kinda like the simple graphics. It's also sad (or impressive, depending on how you look at it) that the SNES game's music sounds closer to an orchestra than the N64 game, which sounds like very cheap MIDI instruments. The SNES game is clearly sampled of course, but uses much better samples. The brass instruments for example, are much more convincing in the SNES game.
Last year, I went through on the hardest route a few times, and I nearly got a 100% score (it was 98% I believe). It's requires good reflexes at parts, and it's one of those games I like to play that really push me to do my best.
I discovered Starfox 2 very shortly after it was leaked onto the internet in 2003 or so. I remember emulators couldn't even handle it properly at first without tons of glitches and flickering (every space battle caused the "Enemy Out Of Range" screen to appear), but then a special ZSNES came out, and I fell in love with the game. People complain about it's length, but it takes quite a bit of time on Expert mode. It's not about the level length as much as it is all the stuff you have to deal with that's thrown at you, such as battleships, IPBMs and enemy crafts throughout space.
I really wish Command had been a graphical update of Starfox 2, with additional content. I think that would have saved the franchise.
