And yeah, Fox was much cooler when his legs were obviously robotic as well as the rest of the starfox crew.
Kinda' wish they'd stayed with that throughout the series.
Actually, that was just those puppets, and promotional art based off of them (only one I'm aware of is that NP cover). In-game (the continue screen) they're definitely boots.

Also, just wanna state I love the original Starfox. I loved it as a kid, but then I started loving 64 a little more when it was released. However, these days I think the original is definitely the superior game. I love the creativity in the levels, themes, music (it's one of my favorite VG soundtracks for sure), graphics and design, it has great atmosphere, and I kinda like the simple graphics. It's also sad (or impressive, depending on how you look at it) that the SNES game's music sounds closer to an orchestra than the N64 game, which sounds like very cheap MIDI instruments. The SNES game is clearly sampled of course, but uses much better samples. The brass instruments for example, are much more convincing in the SNES game.

Last year, I went through on the hardest route a few times, and I nearly got a 100% score (it was 98% I believe). It's requires good reflexes at parts, and it's one of those games I like to play that really push me to do my best.

I discovered Starfox 2 very shortly after it was leaked onto the internet in 2003 or so. I remember emulators couldn't even handle it properly at first without tons of glitches and flickering (every space battle caused the "Enemy Out Of Range" screen to appear), but then a special ZSNES came out, and I fell in love with the game. People complain about it's length, but it takes quite a bit of time on Expert mode. It's not about the level length as much as it is all the stuff you have to deal with that's thrown at you, such as battleships, IPBMs and enemy crafts throughout space.

I really wish Command had been a graphical update of Starfox 2, with additional content. I think that would have saved the franchise.

There's metal sticking out the heel of his shoe. Looks like metal legs to me.

I don't see why it couldn't be random plating on the boots. Captain Falcon's shoes in his SNES design had something similar as well (and I believe I've seen others like that as well, but I can't think on the top of my head), and I think it's just a 90's futuristic design thing, and honestly, I don't see why he'd wear shoes without heels on them.

Not that it really matters much. Just my observations.

I've always liked the original Star Fox, particularly for the music, but the graphics always disappointed me. The ground levels' color gradient and scrolling dots for the ground was never ever a good illusion or effect. It's bad, plain and simple. I never noticed the framerate being all that bad though. As for whether it is like Star Wars, I say no. I don't find any similarities with other Star Wars games beyond superficial ones, and I don't find much even with the movies or books. Star Fox seems to be particularly inspired by Galaxy Force II and that's about it.

By the time I played Star Fox 64 I had already played Panzer Dragoon Zwei and just couldn't get over the blurry colors and boring musical compositions that sounded worse than the SNES original. Not even the "free flight" sections could redeem that game for me, and even on emulators with enhanced graphics I ended up not liking 64.

Something about the ankles in that picture also seems way too thin.
Try stuffing your feet into that boot :B

And the "robotic legs" also made an appearance in Super Smash Bros Melee

As well as the Nintedo Magazine System

Well, his wrists are pretty tiny too.

That may actually be an homage of sorts, though I think in this case they're metal boots, because he's also wearing metal gloves (which I've never seen outside of Smash Bros., and I don't understand how that even works).

I don't think the gloves are really metal, they don't have any major shine to them.
Seems more like the same grey fabric used on his sleeves (leather maybe?).

The knuckles seem a bit shiny though.

For sure, I just find it amusing starfox is a better game than any star wars game I've ever played.
Sooooo..... Never played the X-Wing/TIE Fighter series on MS-DOS then?

That NP cover artwork was definitely based on the puppets used for the starfox box and cart artwork.

Even though the theory about amputating the legs to prevent bloodflow from clogging up seems a bit extreme it also seems like a neat concept.
I for one still believe the whole SF team were dedicated pilot amputees

I love the whole amputation idea. The first starfox felt like a very serious game with some adult themes, starfox 64 turned my beloved starfox universe into pokefox.

I always felt the stupid characters ruined any chance of the series feeling serious, first game included.

Definitely, and the last two pages are dangerously close to turning this thread into another fury thread. Let's please not go there.

Star Fox versus Panzer Dragoon, go!

Yeah, but it's still way more serious feeling than sf64.
