Default 1993 Multi-pathed Console Rail Shooters - Night Striker vs. Star Fox

Night Striker (Mega CD) and Star Fox/Star Wing (SNES) were released within a few months of each other.

I'm a long time fan of both games but if I had to choose it would be Night Striker as I prefer the more fast and intense type of rail shooter. At the time, Star Fox was a bit more unique because of the polygon graphics, though. Both have awesome atmosphere and music.

    Which do you prefer?

I could never get past star fox's horrible framerte and sluggish gameplay. I'll go with night striker.

Star Fox! Easily. Its just a MUCH more appealing game in so many ways and plays great too.

Dunno what you guys mean by sluggish framerate. Have not had an original SNES+Star fox cart in years, but the game plays smooth enough in vids i've seen.

I love Starfox as well, fantastic game all around. The graphics are good, the music is great and the gameplay is fun. The framerate doesn't bother me at all.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say both suck, but relative to one another, Night Striker for me.

Star Fox is awesome, and it plays fine. I played it for the first time ever this year and I had no problem with the graphics, gameplay or frame rate. It's still an engaging game, and I'm pretty sure the only reason it gets trashed around these parts is because it's an SNES game.

Starfox for me, it just seems to have a little bit more variety in the level design and gameplay than Night Striker, plus the boss fights are awesome. Now if the question was between Galaxy Force II and Starfox it would have been more difficult.

    Star Fox.
If the contest was considering the original Night Striker, then it would be a different story. But as it is on the Mega CD, you can barely see the enemies due to the extremely painful pixelation. Star Fox has horrible framerate but at least I can see the enemies at a reasonable distance.
I really wanted to give this one to Night Striker since it has an awesome exclusive arranged version of the soundtrack and it's one of the very few games with analog support on the Mega CD, but the pixelated mess just kills it IMO. Some parts are very frustrating due to that.

I think one of the main reasons it gets so much praise on the net is because it is a SNES game. No one can seriously think that if Starfox appeared on the Genesis, Sega CD, or any other console of the era intact with all of its flaws (framerate, control lag, blandness) it would be as popular as it is.

This is pretty much in line with what I was thinking. I'd also go so far as to say that if Virtua Racing was on the SNES, nobody would care either.

This, however, is taking into account the hardware specs/limitations of each respective console.

So? I don't like Starfox because it's popular. I like it because it's fun, it's got solid gameplay, the music is awesome, etc. It might not be as popular as it is if it was a Genesis or Sega CD game, but I'd still like it just as much.

If Starfox was on Genesis or Sega CD, but still the same game, I'd still like it. I'm with jerry on this one. Starfox is genuinely fun and is very good all around. Some people on Sega-16 need to stop riding the Nintendo hate bandwagon so much. Some Nintendo games are overrated, but nowhere near all of them. You guys all share the same irrational hate that SNES fanboys have against the Genesis. Both camps are two sides of the same coin, no matter how much better they think they are.
