As I witnessed my younger cousin go crazy over the 360 Slim he received for Christmas, I thought back to the many times I had done so as a kid, especially with regards to the Genny.
1995 - After bawling my eyes out over receiving nothing that Christmas (my family's pockets were tight at the time, what little they had was spent on an SNES bundled with Super Mario All-Stars+SMW for my cousins), my dad essentially told me to stop acting like a bitch and placated me with a used copy of Mortal Kombat II ($30). He followed it up two weeks later with a brand-spankin' new copy of MK3 ($70). Both gifts more than made up for that disappointing Christmas.
For that same Christmas, my mother wrote to this "Secret Santa" organization they had here in NYC. I requested a Sega Nomad, a Sega Saturn (w/Virtua Fighter), among other ridiculous demands. Unsurprisingly, I received nothing.
1996 - Received a new copy of Sonic 3D Blast ($65), which I'm writing about for this month's Roundtable as we speak.I'd been increasingly clamoring for the game for months, and begged my dad to give it to me on Christmas Eve rather than the next morning. I quickly grew bored of the game, and found myself more interested in the used copies of Golden Axe II and Fatal Fury which my dad bought me in the days following Christmas. He was less than thrilled at me paying more attention to these older, dusty carts rather than the one he had paid 65 smackers for. I ended up redeeming this folly 16 years later.
1997 - Wasn't exactly for Christmas, but my dad bought me a CIB copy of Strider ($7) earlier that December. I wanted it after seeing it ranked #42 on EGM's 100 Best Games Of All Time List (Issue 100, November 1997). The game revived my interest in the Genny after having sold off my 1995-1997 collection (some 20-25 games) in favor of store credit towards SNES games.
How about youse guys?
