The Tablet has a $300 million dollar budget. How the hell that's assumed its a multi-billion dollar project is beyond me.

SEGA has never, I repeat, NEVER spend a billion dollars on R&D on home consumer hardware. As I recall, Saturn, SEGA's most expensive project at the time was only $650 million.(Which is about $920 million today.) Now they did spend $1.4 billion on Lockheed Martin's silicon in 1991-1992 but that was 3 chipset projects, not one. Dreamcast was barely even $500 million.

Also SEGA is in a better financial situation and circumstance to launch a new home consumer product then have been in 20 years. Their biggest threat Sony has lost pretty much ALL its capital and just got its credit rating downgraded to junk. SEGA has plenty of different markets with potential capital and revenue besides gaming which is why "Orbi" has so many different products. There's plenty of ripe profitable markets such as Franchise,Joint Ventures,overseas vending machine and Casino machine manufacturing, for them besides placing all their eggs in one basket.

Likewise, Sony is NOT Sega's biggest problem... if they are making a tablet? That means they are going head to head with Apple, Sony isn't even a flash in the pan as far as tablets go... although they would have to compete with the Android tablets, all of them, which does include a few from Sony.

If you want to talk mobile gaming in general? Apple (iPhone, iPod, iPad), Nintendo (Gameboy line), and Droid phones would all be direct competitors for anything Sega was to make that even pretended to be a mobile device.


If it's an actual console? Then MS, Nintendo, and Sony are all equally a threat... and possibly the steambox depending upon how it works and is received.

Regardless, them being in a better financial position than they have been in 20 years is meaningless, a paltry 300 million in R&D without any major player involved is laughable.

That could be doable, kind of like the Sony Xperia. Of course they would need to do a better job at their emulation than they have for most... the majority of their classic re-releases have virtually no work done to them aside from high score boards. The Sonic CD remake is one shining example of how it could be done, but of course Sega didn't do that one on their own.

But a good smart phone (again, should be a droid) with a custom Skin and a specific Sega games app could be pretty awesome. Not game changing, but if they did it right, it could be pretty profitable.

Also, Steambox is extremely NICHE. Valve doesn't have enough capital to make it a mainstream gaming device. It's aimed at PC Centric consumers. I don't see normal gamers paying $500-600 just to play Steam games on your TV. When push comes to shove, Steambox and Micro PCs stand to phase out Desktops completely.

Don't forgot that 3DS sales outside of Japan globally are mediocre and unimpressive. Nintendo's portable market empire is aging in the face of the mobile market. Don't even get me started on Vita's ABYSMAL sales. Its pretty much dragging future capital away from Sony.

That's even more riskier than a Tablet. the wholesale OEM pricing as well as the too competitive Android market would be more of a challange then trying to launch a mainstream cutting edge high end tablet.

Some more realistic explanations:

Dreamcast and VMU patents being refiled = Protecting brands and assets.
Saturn controller patents being refiled = Protecting brands and assets as well as use for the USB Saturn pads Sega has been making for years.
Orbi = Indoor amusement park center similar to what they put up in Dubai
Orbi logo = Logo for all the merchandise and equipment in said amusement park
Multi-Touch LCD screens = Border Break machines

Why not go from broke and just do a Tablet that more powerful than other mainstream brands?

SEGA is and always has been an Arcade company. Whenever they sell a home consumer product they usually intend it to have some form of Arcade ports that either are close or match it in the same technical aspect.

The idea of a gaming Android is too overruled.

I have no clear full accurate idea what Tablet concept SEGA is going with. But I'm confident they'll execute it successfully because of how long its development has gone on. Its not like SEGA doesn't have the R&D knowledge and source know how and they just didn't start development a year ago.
