True dat, with fan edits you never know if you have the final version, too many bug fixes and stuff,
I see the fun in having a real cart of a hack/translation, but my OCD would never allow it unless its an old translation that's pretty much been proven to be complete.

so BKIII DC DLX.. too buggy to warrant a real cart purchase.

    That.

I love repros or hacks and unreleased stuff but only if they're good and bug free.

Concerning the 1.5.1 version, the game is playable with all characters and 2P mode works.
So what do you need more ? It is not perfect but it is better than nothing.
And it allows you to discover the unreleased content and 3 secret characters.

A lot of official games had been released with bugs. Also there are plenty of bug free hacks/bootlegs
but they are pointless or simply awful games. Bug free is not the only one thing to enjoy a game.
BK III is a great game, and the director's cut add material and levels. You couldn't be wrong in that way.
If you don't have a flash cart, buying it at a reasonable price is not a bad choice to play it on real hardware.

DC = Japanese version + Cut & Bonus extra content with some bugs. See the first page for details.

I'd rather just play the translated version of BKIII it also has the secret characters albeit only after certain points in the game. The missing content ie: the bike level is so incomplete in DX it's basically unplayable, definitely not worth it IMO. I'll stick to the translated BKIII as it's basically perfect.

The two bike levels are fully playable in 1.5.1. I played through several times with different characters.
Shiva is a fully playable character with all its moves available in this hack version.
You can choose all the secret characters from the beginning with a cheat code.

Is there no way to hack it in so that they are already enabled? I'm lazy.

The code is easy to do : on the BK3 title screen press UP+B, then START.
I don't know if it works on previous versions (1.4 & 1.5). Sorry I don't have any skills in hacking whatever.
I am only a fan of (good) beat'em all, or side-scrolling beat'em up, or brawlers (the name genre is a bit controversial).

Is 1.5.1 newer than 1.5 or are they the same?

Yes, 1.5.1 is the latest version you can find. There are minor changes/bug fixes.
But I have never played the 1.5 version so I am not able to compare them.
