Mega Drive!
Welcome to the future, make your time.
This makes me wonder if the Genesis would have been nearly as popular as it was in NA if it had been called Mega Drive here as well. Somehow I don't think so. As important as the advertising campaigns were to the early success of the Genesis in NA, I don't think Sega could have delivered that same punch with Mega Drive.
Names and advertising are perhaps the most important aspects to selling a product to Americans. I don't think actual quality is as important as presentation. Genesis just has something different that stood out in the market place. Mega Drive is not a bad name per se, but it just sounds kind of generic by comparison. I associate 'mega' with 'turbo' or 'super.' Sure they are exciting adjectives, but using them just sounds like they are trying too hard. Products that are advertised on late-night infomercials usually have similar adjectives in their names. Genesis just stood out in comparison.
I grew up with Mega Drive so that has to be the winner. It must be written as two words and not Megadrive.
Mega Drive is perhaps the most generic, bland console name outside of Nintendo's two "Entertainment System" names.
Genesis is the perfect name for the first true 16-bit console, dripping with flavor, punctuated by the swag of HIGH DEFINITION GRAPHICS.
I grew up calling it Genesis so Genesis gets my vote.
Genesis Does What Nintendon't! Is more in line with names like Neptune, Saturn, and Dreamcast I think.
I'm probably biased towards Genesis since it's what I grew up calling the system, but I won't deny that "Mega Drive" sounds cool. "Genesis" just sounds more like a gaming system, meaning the beginning of an endless source of awesome games and entertainment.
Ammunition Headed Straight For Ya!
...why am I such a purist that I have to find all the original cables for this 32X...
I agree with you, "Mega Drive" just doesn't have anywhere near the same level of spark that "Genesis" does. It's such a bland, generic, and dated name... I do think the system would have done a bit worse under that name here.
(On that note, there are almost certainly more Genesis systems in the world than there are Megadrives. That says which name won in the market.)
Mega Drive by far.
Genesis sounds religios to me(and I don't like religions).
