I think they both need spinoffs.
We could actually see them doing something for once.
Tails Adventure 2? Indeed. He's currently the most popluar character in the franchise & Tails Adventure for Game Gear was actually a modest success. What also helps the case for another Tails spinoff is that the TailsXRouge coupling "Rails" unthinkable 10 years ago & almost obscure just 5 years ago, has gained momentum and gathered quite a.following in the past couple of years. All these factors are creating the contestion of a "Miles Prower" rebranding & revisioning.
Knuckles Chaotix 2? What TSR said, Nah. As a former huge KTE fan, even I'll admit a sequel would be a poor business move by SEGA. His massive popluarity from the 90s & early 2000s has waned. Chaotix really was a unique and innovative platformer, but it was doomed because of the system it was on.
SEGA is the Messiah of Console Gaming.

I'd rather see a new Alex Kidd, Streets of Rage, or Panzer Dragoon.
I wouldn't mind a Tails or Knuckles 3D platformer tailored around the character's abilities.
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.
pff if sonic isnt doing well....
too old for video games huh?
I think in the future it wouldn't hurt. Currently however I think Sega need to keep focus on Sonic. A spinoff is always fine as long as it's fun. I'm pretty sure sega won't risk any spinoffs at the moment in the state they are in sadly.
Seeing Alex Kidd in Allstars Transformed really got me curious in seeing how a modern take on the IP could work. One thing that I really like about Sega these days is that most of what they publish aren't sort of gritty shooter/action game which sort of seem to be the main money makers these days (not saying that it's necessarily a bad thing here).
I'm all for new Sega IPs as well!
As for Sonic's friends making possible appearances in future games, the important thing is that if they do make appearances the mechanics have to be relatively the same. If you take a look at Sonic and Knuckles, playing as Knuckles is just as fun as playing as Sonic because you can go just as fast, but it changes the gameplay up enough in that you can access different pathways through stages by using his abilities.
This design philosophy needs to be one that Sega takes back, I don't want to find pieces of the Master Emerald or pilot a mech in a Sonic game (although admittedly playing as Tails in SA2 wasn't too bad).
There's been plenty of action-adventure "collectathon" platformers that've done well on the market since then . . . maybe not so much this most recent generation, but I wouldn't say it's out of the question. (and IMO that gameplay style works great in 3D too)
Honestly, it's kind of too bad that Tails Adventure was a GG exclusive back then too. Would have been cool as a home console game.
As for Shadow . . . as far as the 3rd person shooter + platformer aspect goes, I'd be fine with that, but there's other areas where that game fell short (especially if you don't play it in small doses -the redundant playthroughs can get grating for one, and the control/mechanics aren't nearly as tight as SA2). The shooter aspect worked a hell of a lot better than the vehicles did . . . yet that's the gimmick that got re-used for Shadow in some later games. (and made for some of the hilariously bad moments of Sonic '06 for one)
OTOH, with the huge margin for screwing up that sort of IP again, it would probably be better to play it safe and avoid that entirely.
Somebody needs to take that batman slapping robin meme and adapt it to this thread.
"... If Sony reduced the price of the Playstation, Sega would have to follow suit in order to stay competitive, .... would then translate into huge losses for the company." p170 Revolutionaries at Sony.
"We ... put Sega out of the hardware business ..." Peter Dille senior vice president of marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment
"Sega tried to have similarly strict licensing agreements as Nintendo...The only reason it didn't take off was because EA..." TrekkiesUnite
