I liked the first Tomba! a lot. It was disappointing to find out that it's considered a hidden gem, and that there aren't many games like it -- I was hoping I'd missed out on a whole generation's worth of 2D/2.5D classics along the same lines.

Also seconded on Heart of Darkness and the two Oddworld games. I haven't tried the PS1 version of Tigger's Honey Hunt, but I enjoyed the game on N64, and I expect the two are fairly similar.

It should be noted that SOTN is better on the playstation than on the Saturn.

I just got metal slug and radiant silvergun on the Saturn.both if those are really good, even though metal slug is just a neo geo port. Radiant silvergun is the perfect blend of 2D and 3D graphics.

id also recommend both the cotton games if you are into shooters.

The gameplay is horrible. And, though it seems like it looks nice at first glance, it's a very cheap attempt at 2D graphics for the 32bit system considering. But, yeah, I got it also because it was so cheap. You'll be the judge.

Like to give a shout out to Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1). Great 2.5D platformer (Its PS2 sequel is great as well).

That game is so good. And so underrated. Downloaded it from PSN for a few bucks. Hope the Ebay prices go down!

I think it is only arguable that SOTN is better on the PS1. Back in the day I chose the Saturn import over the PS1 version after playing through the latter on my roomate's launch PS1. On both his and my PS1 the graphics were fuzzier and murkier than on my Saturn through S-Video. For whatever reason my current last gen PS1 and PS2's S-Video is about equal to Saturn S-Video, so that sort of negates my reasoning back in 1998.

Secondly, yes the Saturn game is a sloppy port with dithering instead of transparency and added load times for no reason, oh and slow down. None of these are game breaking however, and the addition of Maria and Richter shouldn't be discounted. Bottom line, if SOTN is really that great of a game then the Saturn version certainly isn't bad for not being up to par with other Saturn 2D offerings.

Also, Astal is not a bad game in any way. It might be arguable that the level design is mediocre if you take out the phenomenal graphics, but I would say that it is a decent side scroller that leans heavily on the "experience" of seeing highly colorful and scaling levels.

As you said, it's a sloppy port so I think we can point some "reasons".
The dithering is there probably due to the fact that Konami didn't want to spend any money in reworking the engine to adapt it to the Saturn specific hardware, so they just went with dithering, it was probably easier to them.
The extra or longer loadings times are common in PS1-to-Saturn ports due to the Saturn's RAM structure; if the code is not reworked to deal with that, you''ll need to do more transfers in the Saturn side of things.
The slowdown is another common issue in PS1-to-Saturn sloppy ports, probably the original code wasn't optimized to the SH2 and it might be using just a single processor, and a single Saturn's SH2 is slower than the PS1 main processor.
