SORR was never taken down because of donations, it was all one Sega Europe lawyer being a little bit too eager in defending their copyright.

I can see both of your points (Sonic and Criss). But you both used copyrights that aren't yours. Personally it's cool they don't care MUCH about that esp for "dead systems" as I said before if you don't associate donation$ with said project. Just a shame SORR wasn't accepted like Sonic Hacks (I know why) or Pier Solar (because SORR wasn't original). Sonic, what Sonic hacks did you make ?
Your first mistake is that Sega grants Sonic fans an open dialog. When we cross the line, we don't get a slap on the wrist, get to remedy our mistake, and go about it. We get shut down. And it's happened. A lot.
Your second mistake is assuming Sonic Retro was the only sonic hacking site. SSRG routinely got legal threats. And not for leaking actual sega stuff.
Your claim that Sega only sees sonic and nothing else is pretty weak, too. Wouldn't that mean they'd be MORE protective of the game? Why is it that the SeGaGaGa project, which is pretty open and of which Sega knows about, hasn't been shut down? The Shining Force III Translation project? The Monster World projects? Hell, even the monster world remake being built right now? Why isn't SMS Power, which routinely documents and releases games, never shut down? Why isn't DRX? The Chris Senn project? Project S? Why hasn't Mighty Mighty Missile been shut down, an obvious Chu Chu rocket remake, even when it was released for free on the iphone, where Chu Chu Rocket was also released? Do I need to point out all the free Phantasy Star Online servers?
Sega knows about ALL this stuff. The common theme? NO MONEY TAKEN IN.
A retarded Sonic.
That's fine, and I can understand that, but why not TELL us that was the issue? I'm sure Sega has at least one guy that can speak, and type, English there. If donations were the key issue, that's easily returnable and explainable.
And I don't know a lot of the Sonic fan-scene, this is true and I very much admit that. But all I know is, as a casually browsing Sega-fan game guy, that Sonic Retro had positive dialogue open with Sega, Sonic Fan Game Expos, and Taxman's absorbtion by Sega.
To a casual fan-game viewer you see what picture this paints right?
Ah so that is who RubyEclipse is! I saw the statement issued on the forums regarding the SEGA/Shining Force/Youtube debacle.
In case anyone is scratching their head at this point, someone with the pseudonym posted an official announcement from SEGA regarding the takedown notices issued to a number of Youtube channels that fatured fan-made Shining Force videos. Aaron Webber is Sega's Brand Manager.
(Apologies in advance for intruding on the on-going discussion.)

Anyway this stuff is irrelevant now. Project's done, was released, I loved working on it (as I hope the others were), and more importantly fans loved it. Would have loved to avoid the dark cloud that came afterwards, but otherwise it was a damn good project to be proud of.

Of course I can see the picture it paints. But legal matters aren't always as obvious as they may seem to the public. Personally, I've rooted for SORR tons of time. Shit, check this out:
The BPM for my steambox. SORR v5 forever under my favorites tab, with an icon I made for it. I know several members of the Sonic community who do routinely get to talk to higher ups at sega have pushed your game. I know Aaron Webber is familiar with your game, I know other people at Sega are too.
This was all vauge for the Sonic scene too, until very recently. Their community manager position was formed following Sonic Unleashed primarily as a way to gauge feedback for this sort of stuff. All of Sega's recent brilliant DD output is a direct response to information they've received.
Taxman's project got greenlit because he made a public pitch that went viral. Perhaps you guys should do the same. When Taxman pitched his game, I was right there feeding the story to a number of friends of mine who write for big game websites so they'd run with it. If you guys ever did the same, I promise I'd try to do the exact same. There is an avenue today, and Aaron Webber is the head of that avenue. He's the real person, who speaks english, who you want to talk to.
Mainly, I took offense to your attitude towards the Sonic scene. We had tons of growing pains. I watched them. It's not been a smooth road. Trust me.
A retarded Sonic.
