Hyperkin Retron 5 Announced

I wish this thing was out already, there's just too much different information going on.

Like I read this review that claimed that the Retron5 was not an emulator machine because "it did not load roms but actual cartridges"

So when you use that USB-Cartridge thing play your cartridges with the Gens EMULATOR it's suddenly not an emulator anymore?
or in 1992 when I used my Sega copier to load games from disks I was suddenly emulating?

So many people writing reviews without knowing what they are talking about.

I hope this thing comes out soon so we can read sweet reports on how to mod it with a 2.5 HDD with all teh romz on it.

This thing has a USB port on the back. I just know that people are going to softmod the crap out this thing. Then, perhaps you could just plug a usb stick in the back, with your roms, and be done with it. That is assuming, of course that the emulation on this will be better that what is already out there. Other wise, why bother when you already have so many other options for emulation out there?

Also, I doubt that roms requiring the presence of an enhancement chip will work in a hacked setup. The stock internal emulation is clearly setup to use what is on the cartridge, not emulate mappers and such, that are not already there. If someone figures out how to run another emulator on this, again I say, whats the point? There are already other options for this.

Why would I want to put a cart in a hardware emulator with shit sound chips ? Genesis model 1 va2 ebay = $15. Putting an everdrive in a retron is like sending your virgin son to a whorehouse.

It definitely runs emulators. I believe Hyperkin themselves have stated it, and have showed off the emulators features like save states and video filters.

It definitely runs emulators. I believe Hyperkin themselves have stated it, and have showed off the emulators features like save states and video filters.

This is, without a doubt, software emulation all the way.

Here's what would be great: a system on a chip based clone that uses perfect copies of the original circuitry. With today's manufacturing processes, making an 100% accurate SOC that contains copies of every chip inside a console should be completely possible. There's no excuse for making those awful sounding NES and Genesis clones. While the software emulation used by this thing is probably a hell of a lot more accurate than most of the current clones, the purist in me still won't be satisfied with playing a clone until it manages to emulate the system in hardware.

Meh, I plan on hooking it up to an old monitor and messing around with it for teh lulz, I'm mostly curious if they can mod it to run roms.

2) Related to your post and the above. How easy is it to mod? If you can replace the emulator on it with more/better quality ones that makes it a whole lot more worthwhile.

yeah, agreed with all your statements (cant wait for good impressions on the individual emulator quality), but this one's pretty big for me too - i hear the emu scene on android is improving, if i can pick & choose what option works best for me, flexibility like that would go a long way as well.

While I would absolutely love to run Sega CD ISO's I just don't see it happening, wasn't it revealed that the Retron 5 is
gonna come without an SD slot? I heard it was specifically designed NOT to run roms.

Would be sweet if someone managed to mod an SD card slot in there though.

ah see i hadn't heard that bit, but given how little they talk about it (the idea of running ROMs) it certainly does seem that way. that said, didn't they already mention an SD slot for updating it? i was under the impression it would have one, but not necessarily load ROMs from it (until hacked wide open like anything else on android, natch)

The use of SD cards to use ROMS have legality issues, hence, we will not support the use of ROMS on the RetroN 5.

HYPERKIN RETRON5 TO BE DELAYED
New expected delivery date will be quarter one 2014.

Due to faulty pins within the retro video game console, Hyperkin has delayed the launch of its RetroN 5 until early 2014.

"We apologize for the inconvenience," said Lawrence Lee, Hyperkin's Project Manager. "Hyperkin would like to thank you for all the support you have given us throughout the development of the RetroN 5. We are looking forward to its release, estimated to be within the first quarter of 2014, as soon as the issue has been resolved."
