    Default System Cleaner?

I've been looking for a system cleaner and am wondering if there are any suggestions on a specific product to buy or are there any home remedies?

    There's good old rubbing alcohol.

Also, for cleaning some parts, you can use non-acetone nail polish remover. Remember: non-acetone. Normal nail polish remover contains acetone, which will dissolve most plastic.

When I got my Model 2, it was dirty as sin. I used rubbing alcohol, and it didn't do much to the outside, like I thought it would. So I took it apart, removed the top, and put it in a little plastic tub with mildly hot soapy water, and a rag, and gently cleaned it -- not to remove the Genesis logo painted on or the like, then I just rised it off gently, and dried it with towel gently, and looked good as new.

I'd reccomend car dash wipes, however, anything painted on -- like logos, and the like, do not rub over those -- the wipe may remove whatever is painted on -- like logos and what not.

I tried the same with D-pads - take the pad apart and put it in soapy water to clean it, but it still looks the same when dry. Any help there?

Yeah, rubbing alcohol is best for the electric contacts.

For the gunk on the outside I use household cleaners like Fantastik and Windex. I wonder how a magic eraser would work...

EDIT: Magic Eraser not so good. It tends to remove the sheen/polish of the cover. Altho it does clean it well. Hmmm... I wonder if there's a way to re-finish it.

Of course nothing trumps the nail polish remover I mentioned above, unfortunately you have to be careful or you could end up damaging your stuff.

For plastic case pieces I've heard of sticking them in a dishwasher and I have, on occasion, taken them in the shower with me and left them on the floor (and not stepped on them of course).

But my method didn't get all the dirt off the outside so i still had to go over it with a toothbrush and warm soapy water.

Thanks guys! My older system is ridiculously dirty on the outside.

As for cleaning the contacts in the system, should I buy a cleaning kit? I'm afraid to dunk a q-tip in between 'em (will it fit, even?).

I use a Q-tip on the cartridges, but it wont fit between the contacts on the cartridge slot on the system. I've considered getting a peice of rigid cardboard, putting a cleaning pad around it and sticking it in the slot, but I havn't got around to it. I already have the rubbing alcohol, so I dont feel like springing for a cleaning kit.

for contacts i'd get something vaguely credit card in size and stiffness and use that with some rubbing alcohol and some type of cloth.

I just took a qtip dipped with rubbing alcohol, but not too much, and that worked for me.

Haha, well I used an actual credit card wrapped in cloth. It's a credit card I just paid off and am about to cancel, so no worries, I'm not crazy.

It seems to have done the job. I'd been experiencing problems with my Genesis not firing up the games when I turned it on. Now, the problem occurs much less (probably needs a more thorough cleaning).

    I cen't believe I forgot this before...

For cleaning off stickers and other gunk from the plastic, Goo-Gone is the ultimate. That stuff will dissolve anything. No matter how much alcohol and kitchen cleaners I used, I couldn't get sticker glue off my stuff. But Goo-Gone will take it off with minimal effort. Also a product called Citra-Solve is the same kind of stuff.
