Anybody have a "home" blu ray recorder/dvd recorder/vcd recorder with playback for burnt copies of each esp vcd ? I have a large vcd library and I would like to burn 50 vcd or 10 dvd movies to each blu ray. I heard these home/living room versions are more common in other countries at a decent price. I'm looking for a dual tray one so I can burn vcd to blu ray, or one with single disc tray and vhs tray. But more importantly, a unit that ACTUALLY plays burned vcds. I'll use it for Sega footage too.

Sorry, meant to put in off topic.

Why not just convert your vcd's to mpeg files on your computer and then use a media player to play them on your tv?

You can buy media players that either have an internal HDD or buy one without and use an external USB HDD.

That would be the preffered solution. In fact with the CCDs you might not even have to convert them. A lot of media streamers and boxes and bluray players will play that format already streamed from a file.

Yeah you can just copy the DAT file and rename to MPG, but I've heard that vcd's actually added stuff to the mpeg stream,
so if you want to merge mpeg's together then a copied DAT file might give you problems.

But.. if you're not gonna merge them then copying is probably okay too.

Edit : if they are "real" VCD's with actual menu's you might want to make an iso out of the disc with a free program like IMGBurn.
this way the menu is kept and the VCD will play just like it would in a dvd/vcd player.

It's really about what you prefer.

Edit 2 : you can make iso's out of DVD discs too btw, and media players will play them just fine.

Yes thanks Neo, I had many versions of WDTV and other units, and I have done that. I really liked putting formats of my vcds (retail or burned) on it and watching them then surfing youtube on my tv. WDTV are great and cheap, but the buffalo wifi cards are best for them imo.

I just want my vcds on blu ray as a back up (physically backed up) of my pc external hd, just in case something happens to hd. (Some of my 1997 retail vcds are beginning to deteriorate).

Actually, I'd like to know of any home blu ray recorders or dvd recorders that will actually playback burnt vcds I have. Almost every unit claims too, but in reality doesn't.

Because yes sometimes I make my own vcds (I can get them dvd quality by compressing a 720p AVI for example) and I merge things on them with my program, but never could find a home dvd recorder that could actually play them back (because it's not supported as box claims). A better thing, would be to know of a blu ray recorder that could play back burnt vcds, if possible.

Edit. I been playing them off my Saturn, but once in a while it skips you know. It's not perfect.

understandable, personally I went the way of just having 2 HDD's, one to use and one as backup. (for added safety get 2 different brands)

Ugh, why would you do that if you have experience with media players? why not just keep the 720p avi? (or download a 700mb avi dvdrip if its size related)

oh that poor laser unit, old CD based consoles should be hugged and kissed, not used to watch movies.

Well you seem 100% certain about wanting to store your stuff on discs so I'll let you continue your search.
(could get a dune media player with the bluray player addon)

Yes I have 3 external hds. Not sure how long they last though. CDs were rumored to last 100 years, but depending on which kind you have they probably already deteriorated (some of my retail ones have even in cases, but some were from 1985). I think inside hds are mini cds holding info anyway.

Because I like watching dvd quality vcds on my Saturn or DC. A regular retail or burnt vcd is only vhs like quality. Now that I can d/l either 720 p or 1080 videos, I just convert them to vcd, looks like dvd quality. Just for the retro of it, like watching a dvd quality movie on my DC, kind of an irony thing, as DC didn't have dvd player. Or showing my friends the Saturn could play vcds if it had mpeg player. But I'd like to watch them (burnt vcds), my Matrix dvdhd and Batman blu ray on one stand alone home unit. I have many of them, and even though I backed up almost everything I just like grabbing the disc and playing them. But can't find a unit that plays burnt vcds. And to honest, I don't really want to keep playing them off my Saturn.

Ha yes. The Saturn with jvc mpeg card was great for watching them but once in a blue moon it skipped. The DC vcd player isn't very reliable and skips much more. That's kind of why I just want a stand alone home unit that plays my retail or burnt blu rays, dvds and vcds so if anyone knows a model that does this (actually does it, not just printed it does on box) I'd appreciate it. Playing my burnt vcds is the key thing.
