Actually, Originally in 2004, EA wanted the exclusive license. They saw, SEGA's 2K series, Midway's Blitz and even to small extent Sony's Gameday brand as threats to the Madden marketshare and wanted to monopolize the NFL Football brand since they felt that Madden would always assure massive profit if it were the only NFL title available.
In 2008 after 4 years, EA extended the deal, and in late 2010, the NFL themselves seeing strong returns from Madden sales and GameStop marketing agreed with EA to extend it for another year. What's ironic is that its renewal is due this summer.
